By the way, I installed a high water alarm in the main bilge area. I was afraid that I would not likely hear the one integrated with the (yellow) automatic bilge pump, which only sounds at the lower helm. The new alarm only sounds at the upper helm. The only problem with this is that while...

Swift Trawler 42 - Leak under lazarette floor

For what it's worth, I deliberately flooded my lazarette floor to see if the water would run forward to the bilge between the engines, which it did. Of course, when underway this would not be the case.

OK, I'll try and help. Original owner ST 44 2012: 1) No such issue with my Raymarine MFD's. Did have to replace the rubber /plastic trackpad curser/enter piece as the rubber edge wore out. 2) My rudder seals look very suspect, as shown with pictures on my prior posts different thread, but not a...

    Hurricane Irma

Ski, Thanks for posting this fascinating link. Yes, Much of SW Florida & Keys can be viewed after Irma blew through. Just be patient and allow the screen to populate, then simply zoom in for the grim details. It's so sad for so many.

    Hurricane Irma

Marco Island: Lady Di got through with minor damage. Sincere condolences to those who weren't as lucky.

    Hurricane Irma

Right. Just 36 hours ago NOAA had Irma going up the east coast, now, it MAY go up the west coast, but no one really knows. Ask the crew of HMS Bounty, in 2012, in anticipation of Sandy, if simply taking to sea is an idea without serious risk! I agree, you don't get it.

    Hurricane Irma

Looks like Marco Island, south of Naples, FL may be ground zero! Lady Di is spider-web-tied in her floating slip at Esplanade Marina, Smokehouse Bay, Marco. Every cleat, line & fender is deployed. Windows and doors Gorilla Taped. My biggest concerns: 1) storm surge overwhelms the floating...

    Another US Navy collision

It's difficult for me to understand how this could happen. Prayers and sympathy to all involved. I hope that we will all learn from the forthcoming details. Thanks to all of you with military or other "big ship" experience for your posts.

    Transducer replacement

If your MFD can handle the hockey puck, stick-on style, I think it's a good option. Mine is 2012 Raymarine E-120 Wide screen so I had to figure out which product was compatible. There can be no voids (air) in the hull where you locate it.

    Boom tender lift

Mine is creeky (scary) too, but has never failed. Gross weight is around 240 lbs. I have had to replace both cheek blocks twice due to the UV deterioration. Now I protect them from the sun with a rag.

    Transducer replacement

I replaced my "through-the-hull" transducer with the type that simply sends its signal directly through the hull. That is, I abandoned the old one in place and the new "hockey puck" style requires no cutting or drilling. It was a Raymarine product which cost about $115. It was pretty easy to...

    Tipping etiquette...

"T.I.P. To Insure Promptness"; The Origin of Words & Phrases by Wm & Mary Morris I like to think I'm a generous tipper and here are my reasons, in order: 1) I respect "working" people, especially these days. There are far too many "entitlements" providing incentives for the able-bodied to sit...

Of course, the published numbers are under ideal conditions, like, minimal fuel, water, people; bare or clean bottom and running gear, maybe even tail wind and current, etc.... Much like the photo of a McDonald's burger, it's a lot about marketing. With only D4's I'd never run WOT for more than...

    Garmin buys ActiveCaptain

Seems to me that Garmin made an excellent move. Offering AC as overlays on their chart plotters is another competitive advantage for Garmin. I guess that they'll charge their competitors a fee for similar access. Jeff and Karen deserve everything the get. Hard working, and very smart folks...

    Shore power newbie question

You will need access to two 30 Amp connections and a "Y" adapter, like the one in the photo. I found out (the hard way) that my "Smart Y" requires that the 30's be "out of phase" in order to work. I believe that this simply means that the black and white wires need to be dissimilarly connected...

    Beneteau Swift Trawler 44

I run my 44 around 2,800 RPM, yielding around 17 knots, which is fast enough for me. WOT is 3,600 RPM, 25 knots, under ideal conditions. She noticeably semi-planes at around 2,200 RPM. As for being a "loop boat", the air draft, which includes the 3' radio antenna atop the mast, is 28', FYI...
