    Leaking rudder shaft

i changed mine when on dry but i think it is similar to a shaft packing, you can do it while in the wet. there are different sizes, typically the ones for rudder is thinner than the one for the shafts.

    Two alternators, one battery bank

i am pretty sure both my alternators are wired to a bank of two starting batts, each alt wired to one batt. Since the internal regulator sense the V at the batt terminal, even the two batts are connected the V sensed is still the local batt (at least this is how i understand it..) btw house and...

Need New Props On My 34' LRC

Mainboat, where are you located? Wilmington propeller service is well-renowned in southern california. I have a 38' LRC with 3208 260hp turbo with 4 blade 23x22 cupped bronze props. I do not get WOT, probably due to being overpropped, think the PO like the cruise performance better at...

    Wind Generators

If i was to be a long range cruiser or live aboard off the grid, i'd probably look at these options. For the 3 - 4 weeks of the year where we need to cook on the boat (away from shorepower), will just run the genny. I am not saying my boat will ever be a charter, but if i am not mistaken one of...

i have 2 x 85W panels myself with a PWM controller, works really well. sounds great you can be self sufficient. but i am guessing you also carry propane for cooking? i have all electric (110 volt with inverter set up), dont really want to change to propane. how noisy would you say this unit...

    Learned a lesson ....

great to get some new ideas from you guys here, just not sure where to keep all the gear and gadgets... On Catalina Isl. mooring is much tighter than those shown in your photos. They use both bow and stern mooring lines. Basically you pick up the bow first, the mooring line is attached to a...

38' Yacht sank during race to Ensenada - 3 bodies recovered.

yes very rocky according to reports, like a rock wall basically. i really didnt think colliding with a rock could cause such an impact to the effect it would kill someone (yes subsequent drowning or similar understandable). this happened at night, most likely atleast 3 of the 4 crew were in...

38' Yacht sank during race to Ensenada - 3 bodies recovered.

some guys from my local fishing forum were fishing in the area earlier this week and found a floating body, thought to be the 4th and last missing body (the skipper). the coroner reports indicate the 3 men died from heavy blunts to head/neck. would a sailboat going ? 10 kts make such an impact...

    Noise Levels at anchor?

Not to break rules but how many on this forum actually follow this directive to have someone on anchor watch 24/7? Around here (if in a protected anchorage) people dont really have anyone on anchor watch... btw 10-20 kts winds is not the weather i would anchor in overnight.

story here.. World Events | Photo Gallery - Yahoo! News there is a follow up with some strong evidence pointing to fact that the boat did not collide with another boat, instead it basically ran aground on the Coronado Islands.. wonder what went wrong. RIP
