    John Deere 6404DF-02 parts availability

The local John Deere Marine Distributor in Tukwila WA (Cascade Engine Center) covers the whole west coast, and though the 6404's are an old spec, they would be the first ones I would call and ask. Impellers/Filters/Hoses/Belts are all available aftermarket if OEM parts are longer lead.

    Renogy Batteries

I just purchased four (4) of the same for my boat, general purpose application as starting and house batteries, no idea how they will last but so far they start the engines and keep the lights on. For reference, I use my boat as a picnic boat -vs- extended cruising so utilizing the batteries to...

    Unicorn Boat?

Why not add a lower helm to the Hat? Presuming you have forward facing windows on the house as most older SF's did. I had upper and lower helms on my 36 Chris Sportfish and used the lower 90% of the time for the same reasons you mention. Now that my kids are a bit older than yours its more...

DIY rebuilding of diesel engine Yanmar 6LY

I would caution on this - squirting with clean oil after the rings are installed and wiping the oil around the piston rings and skirts is sufficient. You really don't need or want the crowns and ring lands flooded with oil. They are never in that condition when running and adding excessive oil...

DIY rebuilding of diesel engine Yanmar 6LY

I hear you on buying a lot of new parts, but in the case you have here the rust is your enemy and all that pitting is really the driver of your costs. As for all new pistons, these are relatively high-horsepower light duty diesel engines (hence cast aluminum pistons) and even if you run them...

DIY rebuilding of diesel engine Yanmar 6LY

I would be seriously worried about the pitting around the OD of the crown as well, and any pitting in the bowl is equally dangerous as that is the primary area of fuel/gas combustion in the engine and those pits have sharp edges, and sharp edges create hot spots. As for welding a cast piston, I...

    Fuel Issue

check the fuel pressure (assuming 350 MAG = Magnum MPI). Those engines had problems with the paint coating in the "cool fuel module" (filter housing) coming off due to ethanol in the fuel and obstructing the fuel pressure regulator, causing the engine to starve out of fuel when hot.

    Cat mpd

J1939 in the controller area network (CAN) data bus that the ECM and MPD's communicate on. If the CAT ET connected to the ECM and the tech noted that the CAN Bus was active and transmitting then it is most likely a physical layer issue (wiring, terminating resistor, other controller causing a...

Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

So, just before I left Yanmar wanted to work with a NL on a path to market on their 6-AY engine that is a close competitor to a discontinued Komatsu engine that was popular in the NW commercial fishing fleet. NL agreed to take the product on, and it is a very nice/robust (though a bit...

I wasn't trying to argue with you, It just appeared to me that you had missed my first point. As well, it wasn't meant as a "bark-out" my apologies if my response was an offence. I do agree, upon review in retrospect, I did not take much time to create a fully conceived and thoroughly...

Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

You are right on target WRT the patents and locking up any other developments. Cat's ACERT technology with miller cycle didn't work so well on-highway and thankfully never made it to off-highway/marine as the tier requirements aren't in-time with each other and off highway is still immune from...

Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

Apparently you didn't read my whole post: 1-Komatsu entered an agreement with Cummins to provide their electronic engine/fuel system controls as a "black box solution" that made it expensive for Komatsu to do any aftermarket tuning on their industrial certified engines to allow for higher power...

Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

    Considering that They list the Viking 72 as being equipped with a pair of 2,635-horsepower MTU V16-M96L, I'll go with your 5,000 total shaft HP for: BSFC= .350 lb/HP/hr HP= 5000 Total LB= 1750Lb/Hr. Diesel= 7.1Lb/Gal Total= 246.5 Gal/Hr. It's only money...

Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

After 25 years in the business I have limited opinions: Caterpillar = Crap-a-pillar or Clatter Tractor. Cummins = Come-a-part. Detroit Diesel = Dirty Diesel. (I don't prefer Screaming Jimmy or Screaming green leaker but that's just me). MTU = EMpT You Pockets = Reflective of the operating...

    Diesel Two Stroke

Moreover it is the fact that you get all cylinders firing in one revolution - less torsional vibration with multiple lower pressure firing cycles in a shorter period of time. We can idle the EMD engines at 250RPM in gear, 8GPH and respond to clutch commands without stalling...same principal...

    Diesel Two Stroke

Back to my EMD reference, on a Tier III (EUI) 16-710G7C rated at 4000BHP/900RPM continuous BSFC is .325 LB/HP-Hr. Assuming 7.1Lb/gal for fuel that gets you to 183GPH, or 21.8 hp/gal. 2-cycle, uniflow scavenged, using a gear-driven centrifugal supercharger/turbocharger with an overrunning...

    NTSB Report on Dive Boat
