How to anchor fly bridge seat

If you save everyone’s two cents…,, Your deck core, unless it’s been repaired, is end grain balsa. Great stuff as long as fasteners are well bedded. A lot of these boats were shipped with the command bridge combing on the foredeck and the furniture in the cockpit. When dealers assembled and...

    Cruising for Disabled Boaters

Maneuvering is always high stress relative to everything else except an emergency. That needs to be understood by all aboard. The easiest and imo the most effective way of communicating is with wireless headsets. The motorcycle community has been a huge help in making the right headsets...

    Cruising for Disabled Boaters

I’m about the same as Sharpseadog, and use the same methods for getting around. The Admiral and I always wear our PFD’s and we always have friends or family go with us, and going is something we do a lot of. It just takes planning and understanding.

    New Member from PNW

Welcome! First, I really like about any Grand Banks……until I have to get on or off. The Admiral and I are 75 and getting around is getting more challenging. Obviously by my avitar we bought a 38’ Bayliner, and have been very happy with the decision. We can cruise at 8kn or 16kn and have found...

New (to me) GB 36 in Seattle

I suggest you look carefully at the different membership structures that clubs have and develop a mental format that you are comfortable with. I liken it to finding a church, you have to be welcomed and comfortable. Some clubs have a format where the membership is individual with a designated...

One more alternator question (F-L 120)...

Did you increase the output of the alternator? If so, the battery wire is probably undersized and getting hot which cooks the voltage regulator and diode trio.

    Is Autopilot Necessary In PNW?

I’m another “it would be nice, but not required” boater. Too many times when I’ve had to take evasive action where I was the stand on vessel, an operator would yell they had the privilege because they were on autopilot. This includes a few commercial whale watching boats. We, all of us, are also...

    Alternative to varnish

I’m a fan of LeTonquines after trying Awlwood, Cetol, and various oils. The first coat made me wonder about the product, but then I followed the instructions and gave it a quick rub. Lo and behold the second coat was a real improvement! Rub and repeat five more times and it really looks good...

    We bought a Tolly

Congratulations! Friends had one the same vintage as yours. Being at OH you probably have some island cruising experience. If you haven’t considered it, there are a couple of clubs you should look at. One is the Tollycraft Club, the other is Oak Harbor Yacht Club, or any other YC if OH doesn’t...

    Abandoning Seacocks/Through Hulls

When I converted to fresh water flush I capped one of the incoming through hulls and connected the other one to a new raw water wash down system. There was only one discharge fitting so I ran a replacement hose that connects to the top of the tank as an additional vent.

    Greeting from Sydney Australia

I’m going to add my Welcome to everyone else’s. In case RT Firefly wasn’t clear enough, read post number two and follow the instructions. Your life or someone else’s life depends on it. You might look around for a group like Power Squadron who teach all sorts of classes involving everything...

    East coast to Ak?

Buddy boating Okay, I’m risk averse. I like the comfort of knowing someone is nearby in case things go badly. My opinion is centered around if something major happens, help can be a long way off, and that water is cold. Can it be done solo? Sure. Do your research. Never ever cut a marker...

    East coast to Ak?

Two members of my yacht club have shipped three new to them boats from the East Coast. One member is a repeat offender. Another had his moved from Ensenada to Nanimo, BC. All used the purpose built ship and every trip was successful. My understanding is owners and crew can stay aboard their...

Has anyone melted down their old bronze?

A couple of thoughts. First, go to YouTube and search for Tally Ho, then to the “floors”. The process is presented in detail, and will explain some of the pitfalls that can show up later. Second, at least for the pipe fittings, why not buy steel and have it ceramic coated? If you want to cast...

    I think I want a steam cleaner

I bought a McCullough several years ago and it does a great job. The output isn’t so much as to fog me out, making it slower, but it works better than trying to scrub band rinse. It holds about a gallon of water and I can work for a couple of hours on that. Then I take it home to use it to clean...

    Induction Cooktop

Both GMS and I left the oven on the original circuit. That way the oven can operate at the same time as the cooktop. I know my Admiral is happier with the setup. And yes, we both have Scott to thank for the stainless steel.

Anyone here understand how the Victron Argofet works?

That’s kinda what I gathered. I have four banks of batteries. 2 group 31 starting, recharged from the port alternator, 4 golf carts for the house/accessories charged by the starboard alternator, 1 group 27 starting battery for the generator recharging from the generator alternator. All of these...

    Induction Cooktop

I installed a two burner induction cooktop last year and am thrilled. It is wired to our Freedom 25 2500 watt inverter with a dedicated circuit breaker and wires. Several others have converted their electric Princess ranges ditching the burners and keeping the oven. There needs to be a passive...

Anyone here understand how the Victron Argofet works?

Yesterday I sent an email to Victron asking if the ground wire was required if the energizer circuit was not being used. Ten minutes later I got an email telling me yes, I need to connect a ground wire. Later in the evening I got to wondering if there needs to be a keyed positive wire to the...

    Docking or Divorcing

We are in floating dock territory, some more floating than others, in Western Washington and the British Columbia Coast. We have headsets and have found them to be very useful although my more practiced crew don’t feel the need to use them in good conditions. They have been boating all of their...

    Cabin flooring - replacing carpet

We don’t have a dog of our own but one of our kids has the boat dog. There have been zero problems with scratches from the dog and only one easily fixed one from me. I’m finding Seafin to be very robust and resistant to scratching. With the seven coats (I started with five) the floor is really...

    Cabin flooring - replacing carpet

We did our 38 Bayliner with teak and holly half inch plywood and couldn’t be happier. The finish is seven coats of SeaFin wet sanded in so the pours in the wood get filled creating a smooth finish. That part sounds like more work than it was. The pictures were taken in process.
