Installing Cold Start device on T6354

I have the same engine in my 77 Mk l. Don't waste your time or money. Buy a can of starting fluid with a little plastic tube on the nozzle. Open the floor, put your key in the ignition and aim the the starting fluid at the turbo intake but not directly in it. Turn the key and give a short blast...

    two engines or one

You are seriously over revving those engines. Pull out and read your owners manual. 2400 rpm for limited time is acceptable.

Marina living - what are we missing in this budget list?

You may want to check on haul out contract costs. If you moor in some places you have to have haul out contract in case of bad weather. It is required in Morehead City and Beaufort and hard to get.

    Grey Water Discharge

This is not a solution, but I moor my boat at quite a nice marina which has full facilities including laundry. Everybody here takes their showers and washes their clothes in these facilities which are clean and nice.

Mooring comfort, Grand Banks vs Nordic Tug

Tom makes good points. I like the one about changing locations. Look for a protected harbor somewhere. If you are one danger of being thrown down by traffic a quarter of a mile away, in my opinion, you are in the wrong place. Also think of your boat like a car or anything mechanical. When it...

    Perkins starter

Thats another great idea. I was lucky enough to have had a stud on the water pump I just replaced and it came in very handy to support the weight. Thanks. I knew I would get some good ideas from this group.

    Perkins starter

I love the strap idea which I will definitely use as I have had many birthdays. Thanks

    Perkins starter

Hello all, Once again I turn to the wisdom of those who've been there and done that. I hav a 77 Mainship with a Perkins 6.354T in need of a starter. An online search reveals several types but I can't tell which is the right one. I have the engine number but not the part number. I was hoping to...

    Is this speed realistic

No. The power to weight ratio doesn't compute to me.

    Raw water motor flush

Lots of good ideas so far. My goal will be to ultimately do the little and cheap stuff first and if necessary graduate to the more serious stuff. It's in the water now where it will stay unless a hurricane comes and I have to pull to the hard.

    Raw water motor flush

Hello all, I have seen a thread where motor Flushing was discussed but I can't find it now so I want to kick myself but anyway I have a Perkins 6.354T that wants to heat up too much. It takes an hour or so but will go to 200 and beyond. My first guess is strainer. Second is sopped up passages...

Do boat owners ever fall off their boats?

Ahoy there. If you have had a big boat and you have some age on you I would say there is a great chance you have. Captains who say different are the same ones that are likely to say they have never been sea sick......and are probably lying. The worst culprits are non floating finger docks which...

How often do you need your lower helm?

I like them both for all the reasons already posted. I have a Mainship 36. I use both. Trawlers move very slow but near the docks I find the lower helm best so that I can run out and hook a dock or line without going down a set of stairs.

    Routine Engine Start

I have a Mainship with a Perkins diesel. Diesel mechanic will tell you to never crank it in the marina more frequently than once a month. To do so means that the fuel never burns adequately off and will crud up the engine causing eventual damage. It will not get hot enough in the marina to burn...

    satellite tv antennae on boat?

I use a King Tailgator. The whole outfit was less than $500. I am tied up at the dock most of the time. I mounted mine on the radar mast. I tapped onto a friends service and it costs me $7 a month. Works well. Occasionally on a wind shift I have to reboot it but reception is superb and the...

    Attack of the MainShips

Hello, I bought a 1977 Mainship 2 years ago for 20k and it was one of the best purchases I ever made. Granted, the 34 is comfortable live aboard for only two people but I can handle her by myself. It is built like a battleship and has the original Perkins diesel which is almost bulletproof. One...

    drain clogs

I have now drilled a 2" hole into the top of the manifold and as I suspected it is full of junk. Will know spend some time augering, pressuring and vacuuming the gunk out of it. Jus a bad design but the new hole will make it easy to clean. Thanks everyone.

    drain clogs

Hi Pete, I have tried the drain openers, and snake. I can, but haven't, tried the water pressure because I'm afraid that I could blow apart the fittings and the boat is in the water. Interesting idea about the septic tank stuff. If it would eat the debris and liquify it so it would drain out...

    drain clogs

Hello all, I have a 1977 Mainship and it has a rear cockpit. In the cockpit it has two rear drains 3 inch and at the front of the cockpit are two drains that handle the water coming down the gunwales. The drains lead below the deck and into a manifold. At the bottom of the manifold is a drain...

    Smoking Perkins 6.354T

I would like to thank all of the contributors to my diesel education. I have learned a lot and appreciate it. Assuming I haven't damaged the engine irreversibly I will change my habits. Thanks all.
