To Varnish or not to Varnish that is the question

If you are talking decks just throw several 5 gal buckets of seawater on them on sunny days. If railing, bite the bucket and varnish pia to keep it up tho. I have a 32 woody too and that’s what I’m doing. But keep those decks as is pls.

SCUBA Diving Off a GB Classic

I’m a diver. I have a 32 sedan. You need the space for all the gear in the aft. . The GB classic was never meant to be a dive boat. The OP describes one of the very few 36 sedans. Not an aft cabin. I can also say from experience that taking all your gear off in the water and tying it off is a...

    Winter Cruising in the PNW

Wear sweaters and enjoy a special opportunity in the PNW. I moved to Seattle from Miami so know both. Water is for the most part protected if you pay attention to the weather especially wind direction.

GB32 Woodie Under Contract: Lots of Questions :)

There is a nice thread on this forum that discusses classic GB replacement windows. The GB window structure can be disassembled and replaced on DIY basis or I’ve seen quotes of 1000 a window. Need someone who’s done it before and will do it right. I’ve heard it’s a one day job for one person.

GB32 Woodie Under Contract: Lots of Questions :)

It is a great project for sure and a bit of an experiment going fast like you are. Appreciate keeping us informed along the way. Have you been surprised in regards to rot? And how are your transom corner.s? That’s where water collects.

    Open vs. Covered Moorage

Covered for me because I’m on a wooden boat. Very true about not finding the leaks until you are in the rain outside. No issue with darkness, etc. If you use the boat just take it out. Also I’m bow in so as another poster mentioned, we can sit outside dry and listen to the rain.

    Engine Seacock Open/Close

My engine seacock froze open recently. I’m going to haul the boat in next month or two to be able to rebuild or replace it. I’m used to having to clean a raw water strainer from earlier boating days, and need to shut the water supply to do so. Not so much the case in the PNW but still, I’d...

Newbie here... Cali 34LRC vs. CHB 34? 30k liveaboard

I see you are up in the panhandle .. are you planning on using the boat thereabouts? And by the way congratulations on your decision and saving the money to buy the boat. 30K will buy you a decent one if you buy carefully. If you are single, and I assume you are active, maybe consideringdiving...

Would you buy or avoid this boat if you were in my shoes?

I read the survey and I own a wooden Grand Banks and I understand your budget. This boat as is is surveyed as fair at best, and will take a lot of work to get to “ok” . And it’s wood and I think you and the boat are in S Florida. Given your budget IMO this boat would serve as a live aboard...

    Ford Lehman survey issue help

Coolant leaks are not common on any Diesel engine and definitely not on a FL 120 ( I own one). Yes it sounds as if you are being played.

GB32 Woodie Under Contract: Lots of Questions :)

I own a 32 GB woody. I love wooden boats and embrace the notion of being a caretaker and paying it forward. If the boat you describe is in the condition you describe, I can only say that you should never, ever buy it.

Mooring comfort, Grand Banks vs Nordic Tug

You are going to roll a lot if you are hanging off a mortgage or at anchor on a 32 foot boat if there are passing wakes no matter what the boat design.

    Deadrise at transom

Trawlers don’t go fast so are designed with a fine entry forward ( some more than others) and very little deadrise aft. My GB has a wet ride due the fine entry with little flair. Flatish deadrise aft also makes for a more stable boat at low speeds

    Scuba from a trawler

I have a 32 GB I plan to use for diving. it is a sedan style therefore has a large cockpit and no steps so lots of room to lay out gear and a large lazerette to store everything but the tanks. I will buy a four tank box design to store them in the cockpit when I dive. As other posters have...

    Overpropped...But Why?

+1. This is trawler forum after all. Trawlers are f’n slow so don’t need much hp to go 8 knots. My FL powered GB doesnt even pull 2400, but I only cruise at 1750. The “over propped” propeller allows me more torque where I need it, lower down the power curve when I bump the throttle to turn the...

    *Blue Water* Bahama cruising?

I think you nailed it. From all the posts I read in this interesting thread, I’d suggest we are speaking of a passagemaker. With blue water sort of a description that is trawler-related due to range and budget. The USS United States liner was a very fast safe passagemaker for example—forty...

    *Blue Water* Bahama cruising?

I love the Berries. Great Habour Cay. I used to take my 25 foot diesel Sea Vee out from Miami and once delivered an 18 foot flats boat. Started to tow it but ran the 90 miles in it instead. Calm conditions and I remember the flying fish were above my head. I like to freedive there and I’m sure...

Not So Slow Boat for Puget/Desolation Sound

I’d go with the Nordic Tug. I believe they come with Cummins single and with the speed capability you seek. Ifyiu can live with 10 knots max 8 knots cruise a 36 Grand Banks or other builder three cabin Classic will do the job and has the two working spaces you described very well designed. They...

    *Blue Water* Bahama cruising?

Regarding the Bahamas I’d say the “blue water. portion is the Gulf Stream. But it is such a short crossing from Florida that blue water skill described in this thread aren’t really required. Just a weather window. A fast boat will get to Bimini in 90 minutes. But if there is a Northerly or a...
