Dingy Towing Harness - shackles, carabiners, locking, etc.

I've been towing our dinghy for short hops using a bridle made of 1/2" MFP float line attached to the same line going to the boat. Since this isn't our main mode (we put the dinghy on it's davit for long hops or rougher conditions), I've just been securing the lines using bowline knots. I want...

    2009 np 43'?

Our experiences with our NP45 in heavy seas are here: https://mvturtle.net/2022/12/29/hood-canal-2022/ TLDR; this is not a Bluewater boat, but it handles very well if the waves are within 45' of the bow. The top-heavy design makes beam seas fairly rolly. Though, the 43 is likely lighter (though...

    Predict Wind?

Agree with DDW here. I’ve been using PredictWind for a few years and found it to be an excellent tool. Around Puget Sound, we’ve found the PWE and PWG models to be quite accurate. We never rely exclusively on the app though. We’ll typically compare it with NOAA forecasts and our own knowledge of...

NTSB: Undertorqued Bolt Caused $3.8M in Damage Aboard WSF Ferry

Sometimes, “tight enough” is ok, but I still try to use a torque wrench whenever possible.

    Waste Water Tank Size?

250 fresh, plus a water maker. 65 black with fresh water flush. Good for a week with four of us. We have a small gray water tank for the shower that helps break down suds before they go overboard.

    North Pacific Yachts

We purchased NP4512 in 2020 and have been very pleased. Happy to answer any questions you may have. Also, there's a link to our blog in the Contact Info tab of my profile that covers some of the commissioning and maintenance stuff we've done. I posted a lot when the boat was being built and we...

    Selene or nordhavn

Very happy with our NP45 as well. We're still in the shakedown phase, knocking out some bugs. But we've got around 80 hours of very comfortable cruising now. Some high-level differences from when we were searching. 1. The NP is not really a Blue Water boat. Out of the gate, it's not going to...

    Mounting a dingy topside

We've found over the years that you get what you pay for with dinghys. This is the "AB Sport" package configured by Guyer Boat Works. 10.5' AB hypalon, stainless folding bench seat and minimalist helm. Power start and tilt. Fuel-injected 20hp outboard. 6-gallons of gas in the bow locker. Garmin...

    Mounting a dingy topside

We did a 10.5' AB with a 20hp motor and it just fits. We over-hang the rear, slightly, so are storing the rails behind the dinghy for now. There's some space beneath it, so we'll probably lay them down there once I work out some kind of pad.

    Charcoal, gas, or electric grill?

I’ve been looking at the Blaze and it looks amazing. Then, I realized it’s 50 pounds, so I wouldn’t be able to rail mount it. How is yours mounted?

    Puget Sound Sample Itinerary

Hard to top what dhays, said. I’ll put in a plug for keeping a Waggoner Cruising Guide aboard. I find it a bit ad-heavy, and much of the information is fairly high-level, with a fair bit of marketing thrown in. But, it’s hard to beat for a general overview of the region - and it’s a great...

I have the same question. We’re commissioning a new boat and I want to set up my AIS to broadcast our MMSI. Any pointers for tips on how to do this?

Sharing Boat Handling Lessons, (Good or Bad idea)?

My wife and I hired Captain Linda for a day lesson on our boat out of Shilshole in Seattle. She was super helpful - a bit blunt and direct, but we got a lot out of it.

    shore power cord question

Please let me know if you find an adapter for 30-amp shore to the 50-amp smart plug. I’ve looked and I can’t find a set that doesn’t require two adapters and a 50-amp cord.

    shore power cord question

I don’t think they’re out of phase. Dave walked me through it so you might want to call him. I also found this, which was helpful. https://www.rvtravel.com/rv-electricity-power-principals-50-amp-shore-power/ “... there’s a center-tap on that 240-volt transformer winding that further divides it...

    shore power cord question

You’re correct that it’s jumped. This is a 30-amp / 125v cord adapted to feed both sides of your 50 amp / 250 panel (I have the same one). Unless you have AC, you probably don’t have any 240v devices on board. So, you should be getting a total of 30-amps across both 120v sides of your panel...

    shore power cord question

The bridging in the cable was done in the smartplug connector. This is identical to the jump you’d get by using an adaptor like this on the pedestal side. https://www.westmarine.com/buy/marinco--eel-pigtail-adapter-50a-125-250v-male-to-30a-125v-female--12998399. It’s the same circuit, just...

    Battery concerns

Yes, turn off the water heater. Are you sure it's on the inverter? Most water heaters require shore or generator power. And ditto to what ScottC said - most boats have a fresh water heat exchanger for the engine coolant which provides hot water under way. Also, in summer weather, the water in...
