I have no clue!. I ran my hand over the section of the floor where the tank was placed and found nothing there that I could tell could have caused it. I couldn't find any evidence of significant corrosion anywhere near the hole. It's a mystery to me.

This is what I use. If your strainers look like this, try a simple 1/2 (or whatever size fits) socket drive handle. I've been using it for years. It even works if any of the end tabs on the caps break.

Real easy to change with no mess. Just drill a hole on the side, rotate 1/4 turn, drain in small container, replace.
