    Hurricane Norma, La Paz BCS

K, keep an eye on insurance policies being renewed in 2024 and take note of the substantial increase. Including those policies with companies that insure world wide. Let’s say that you are with Pantaenius and your boat is in the PNW well guess what, because of the hurricanes in Mexico your...

Why Move from Sailboat to Trawler?

Depends on usage First off we travelled at 7kts in our sailboat and now we travel 7kts in our motor yacht. We enjoy the journey. If your usage is to travel the world or half of it then my thought is a sailboat is the way to go, mainly it’s a cheaper mode of travel. If your usage is mainly in...

    Hurricane Norma, La Paz BCS

Responsible Boaters We spent many years down in Mexico but always moved out of the hurricane areas. It is because of these irresponsible owners that don’t have a proper hurricane action plan that are causing our insurance to escalate out of control.

Biggest boat for 1 1/2 persons to operate

Comfort Factor I think that it totally depends on what you plan on using the boat for. Are you going to live aboard or just sail weekends with a few longer vacations of a few weeks. Local cruising or world travel, for world travel purchase a sailboat not a trawler. You can cruise around on any...

    Atlantic Buddy Boat or Crew

Many factors in the decision to ship. When we had first checked into shipping back in August for a December sailing the quotes were outrageously expensive. Yes we knew that we would be adding hours on the engines but hey that’s why we cruise, to get the adventure you have to add hours. Engines...

Update and answers, We have decide to ship from Palma to Antigua where we will continue the journey to Panama and up the west coast. Read through some very good points and questions, I’ll try to answer a few. First off we have done a sea trial across the Mediterranean as we started in Montenegro...

    Atlantic Buddy Boat or Crew

Peter, Yes we have a burn of 6.8gph and the distance is approximately 2150nm at an average 7.2kts. So you were very close. Hopefully we get the push but the current is only .8 kts average so hopefully 7.7 kts average should be attainable. On our way to Gibraltar we were going to check our burn...

    Atlantic Buddy Boat or Crew

Just wondering if there are any other trawlers thinking about crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean? We are currently getting ready to make our short legs to the Canaries then to Cape Verdes before the longer journey across to Granada. If no other trawlers for buddy boating we would be looking...

    Is Anyone Cruising Right Now?

Nope that’s about it. Thanks all for the good wishes, really had a tough decision with this covid stuff but we thought that the safest place to be would be on a boat away from crowds.

Hey Snowbirds, what are your migration plans?

Hey balder8 we’re heading your way. Currently waiting out weather in San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily. Hopefully mid to end of November out Gibraltar straits and make a left turn. Plan is to be in the Caribbean for the winter and then late March do the ditch to the Pacific and up to Canada for July.

    Is Anyone Cruising Right Now?

Ultimate Cruise Well we’re done, finished up the purchase of our new trawler and heading home. 70’ Hatteras purchased in Montenegro at the end of August and we headed out end of September. Crossed the Adriatic over to Italy and are currently sitting in Sicily waiting for a weather window to get...

    Teak deck leaking

Leaky Decks First to locate the leak get a hose and simulate rainfall above where it leaks into the boat, if there is a slope go to the high point as water takes the least path of resistance. Look for any loose calking or screws, that’s usually where the problem is. The fix is to remove the...

Buying a boat in Caribbean (or the windward) Islands and bringing back to states.

Distant purchases Hey Hammer, We purchased our sailboat in Antigua back in 2008 so things might be different now. The price was not discounted because we had to get to the boat and home again, the price was still based on the market value. As far as a surveyor we found a great one that lived on...

Need advice, boat leaving Croatia with new purchase, avoiding VAT from Europe

Captn James, Hey we are in about the same situation. Wondering if you hauled the boat for a survey and what we’re your haul out costs. We are using Anacortes Marine Documentation for all of the paperwork. Trying to get over to survey the boat but difficult during this Covid thing. Good Luck...

    Moorage and Hauling in Europe

Just looking for anyone with Europe experience for hauling. Got a quote from a representative for hauling, blocking, 5 days on the hard and then back in the water. 4000 eu which works out to $6,000. Can. Sounds a little much for a 70’ trawler?

    Moorage and Hauling in Europe

Does anyone have any experience in hauling their trawler while in Europe. Trying to get an idea of the cost. A representative of the boat in which we are looking at told us that to haul, block on hard for five days and put back in water would be 4000 eu which in Canadian dollars is $6000.00...
