    Dock line size, GB42?

Both sizes are useful On our Permanent dock (which proved to be not permanent - Sally took the whole marina), I normally use 3/4" and leave them at the home dock for easy return. When on the move we use 5/8" for easier handling and fastening to cleats, etc. We have since sold our 42' GB and...

Opinions on "best" iPad navigation app?

Switched from Blue Chart Mobile to Aqua Map I tried Aqua Map for first time yesterday for a 5 hour trip across Mobile Bay from Dauphin Island, AL to Gulf Shores, AL. Worked fine and showed all the active captain anchorages, etc. Simple to operate, excellent screen displays on both my IPAD and...

Putting an offer on a boat sight unseen tomorrow

There has got to be a bunch of diesel powered boats around that size out there. We owned a 32' carver with twin 454's gas and it was quite expensive. We also had intentions of the 7 or 8 knot cruise but always found our way up on plane at about 15 knots. Diesel is so much safer in my opinion...

    Grand Banks Fuel Consumption

In my experience DDs have parts readily available and mechanics who know them as well. Not sure I can agree with the "leave them alone advice although other choices such as the Lehmans is certainly a good one too

    Grand Banks Fuel Consumption

I have a 1981 GB with twin detroit 453's. I average 3.5 gph when on the move and that is with 15k generator running ,most of the time. Twins really improve handling in docking or tight quarters when no bow or stern thrusters are available. I've owned it for 7 years and still in love with it...

    Towing and Shaft Brake

Careful with pipe wrench. If you score the shaft and have to remove it, it could mess up your packless shaft seal.

Type of Dingy, Inflatable or NOT?

Bullfrog rigid tender with aluminum hull and not inflatable. I have a 10' with 15hp four stroke. It's heavy but strong, and fast (21mph).

    stairs/ladder?

Our 42' '81 Grand Banks has stairs. Great for people and great for our two dogs and visiting grand kids. Ladders just wouldn't cut it for us.

Oil Absorbant Sheets - Where to Buy?

Newpig.com. Found them during BP Oil spill fiasco here on the gulf coast. Good prices and good products.

    Electronic Logbooks

Wheelhouse technology for me. Can upload invoices etc as well for good record keeping without the shoe box under the bed.

    Grand Banks Advice

We've owned our 1981 GB 42' classic for 6 years now. Twin 453 Detroits. Large enough for extended stays for two and 3.5 gph with generator running a lot of the time. Teak can be tiime consuming. Love it though.

    Retrieving anchor

We release tether early when approaching anchorage. Wife is on the anchor and I'm at the helm. She does not free fall but lets down with the windlass. Once we back down and set the anchor, I leave the helm and hook the snubber lines on the chain taking all pressure off the windlass. On departing...

    Starboard swim platform

I have an order in for a replacement teak swim platform for my 42' GB. Here is their address: S&P Custom, Inc. 4037 7th Terrace South St Petersburg, Fl. 33711 http://www.teakmarinewoodwork.com/ Can't rate it yet but they have been very thorough in obtaining measurements etc.

Just got the Trawler... Now what do I need to buy???

I'd consider a west marine franchise. That will cover all of the above. ? Honestly while we did do a first heavy shopping trip to west and target etc, we got things in the anticipation that we barely if ever used. buy as you need not just what you think you will need.

How Many Uses For a Wet/Dry Vac Aboard?

Washer leaked all over aft cabin when hose let go. It helped with the mess. Use for dog hair on upholstery and rugs too. We have a small one.

    Starting my journey......

Just another consideration would be to open the door up a bit to the smaller trawlers to start with. They would generally already have those items on your wish list. Check out the older 32' To 42' trawlers from 1980 to 1990 on yacht world.com for example. A couple pop up just above your starting...

    Bought the boat

After 59 miles you will be amazed at how much you will learn and hopefully you'll remember to make it fun. While there are serious things out there, just take it slow and enjoy.

    Boat Shows

Just got a room at the courtyard Marriott on sea breeze for the Fort Lauderdale Nov 3rd show. Last show I attended was in Annapolis in 1981 where I actually fell in love with a new 42' Grand Banks. It only took me 29 years to be able to afford to by that boat or at least its sister ship. Yup...

What Do You Pay For Or Do Yourself

Bandb, I do spend that lazy idle time thinking about all those things I could be doing... Then about who I can get to do it. That's inventive, right?

What Do You Pay For Or Do Yourself

I'm still working 5 to 6 days a week in our own business ( real estate and vacation rentals on Dauphin Island AL.) at least during the spring and summer months. I'm also 71 and not as flexible. About all I do are the routine fluid checks, checking and cleaning strainers, filling water tanks...

    Midnight Re-boarding, can you? Alone

I have the 4 rung ladder under hung on the swim platform. Piece of cake to deploy from in the water. Unhook the rubber strap and just pull out . Found the 4 rung much easier for a big guy than the 3 rung model to climb up on.

Fuel burn on Mainship Mediterranean 41

How much fuel will she carry? I had a 32' Carver with the 454's and always felt our tanks were too small for the average fuel burn usually on plane. We had to plan for a lot of fuel stops but gas was pretty darn cheap then. By the way, they were darn reliable engines

Anyone prepping along the Florida and Gulf coast??

In our case, we are not safe at the marina here on the island. We have seen a normal tide surge of over eight feet above normal high tide and no floating docks. DAUPHIN island is a barrier island about 7 miles out from the Mobile county mainland. We're usually first hit and hardest hit for this...

Anyone prepping along the Florida and Gulf coast??

Dauphin island here (mouth of Mobile Bay). Have set up plans to go on the hard at Saunders Yacht Works in gulf shores early next week if necessary. Was already scheduled in after Labor Day for teak deck replacement -going to an alwgrip non-skid surface. Normally we head up the river system...
