    Help trawler confusion

That's just wrong... Back then the hulls were stronger - the interior layouts were a masterpiece of space conservation - the engines ( mostly 6-cyl) were economical ; built to last and easy to fix - the Taiwanese wood crafting was second to none , and they were alot sexier than the plastic...

    Correct pitch

Cap - ... read Edelweiss Gun - My 120 Lehman turns a 4 blade 23 x 18 to rated rpm ... to tweak props to rpm the formula is usually 1 inch pitch = 300 rpm / 1 inch diameter = 150 rpm . Cupping can help some if you dont have room for more diameter.

    keel cooler coolant filtration

I'm with Swampu on this one ..... just flush your cooling system out if you're that worried .... a few flakes of rust wont stop you in the water , but clogged filters will . ... but you will need to wait for Marin to weigh in on this as usual.:)

    Battery charger question

I also like Newmar chargers . I have one that has served my lobster boat for over 10 years without any probs. I have a Charles charger on my MT , and I'm not too fond of it ...it makes alot of line noise that I pick up on my fm reciever ( yes I know all about line filters Psneed);)

    Transmission removal

"and shaft bending and premature wear on things like cutless bearings at worst" You will Not bend your shaft from an out-of-alignment shaft. Statements like this are why you should take comments from 'backyard mechanics' with a grain of salt ( and shot of rum).

All of a sudden, dark gray smoke and reduced rpm. ??

Did the new air filter fix the problem ? Is it a paper filter ? .. did it get wet when you had that wet exhaust leak ?..or even damp?

    Dripless seals...

If his dripless shaft seal has a stainless 'donut' shaped object on the shaft just before a rubber bellows , then loosten the 2 set screws on the sides of the donut . Then he can slide the shaft through that and aft out of the way.

    Marine Trader transmission noise

I have the eggsact same noise coming from my ZF gear on my lobster boat. It only does it if its alittle low on fluid , and its louder if the gear is cold (winter months). It's been making that noise at start for over ten years and always runs fine the rest of the day , so I dont worry about...

The downside of wood boat maintenance

There won't be many of those ' beat-up ' shrimpers left either after a few more years. There are still a few fishermen up here that would rather fish a wooden boat and wouldn't mind the maintenance , but the insurance companys wont write a policy on them ..... kinda sucks.

How best to handle strange behavior?

^ AGREE^ I can tell you through many years of commercial fishing and a few years of schloping around on my trawler that the dolphin / porpoise will easilly overtake any trawler and play with you and be gone ... ... some boat going 20kts ? .. thats alittle different ... but to post a pic...
  21. Bugmon

The downside of wood boat maintenance

Yes ... in most any sea conditions a wood boat will 'ride' alot smoother- be alot more comfortable than a glass hull boat ( of the same type hull ).

    estimated time and route

My canadian trucker charged me $2.00 / per mile for my last boat ... but that was back in 1997:)... I thought I heard $3.00 / mile lately ... anyway - the cheapest way to get a boat from point A to B is usually to truck it. I would persue that unless you want to enjoy a sweet slow poke

Am I the only one who talks to his boat?

You can ' animate ' any item that you want to and enjoy that as long as you wish , as long as you have a good imagination. There is nothing wrong with that :)
