    SF Bay Area Questions

Going out the "Gate" You choose the time, tide, swell, Fog, and wind conditions before going out the SF Bar. You check the web to see how many ships are coming in before going out the channel. Generally, the most dangerous times are on a strong outgoing tide facing a strong incoming wind...

    Drive plate

Black Crumbles When I had those crumbles on the engine and air intake, I traced the source to the belt pullies. The rust on the pullies were sanding material off the belts, which was being flung around the engine room. Later, I had an alternator fail. I discovered that it was full of...

    Albin 36

I found an 1979 Albin 36 for sale. Price $34k.** Single Lehman 120.** Surprisingly, modern Furuno electronics.** I don't know about the decks or condition of the bilge.** I do know that I saw a mid 80s Albin and really liked the layout. To any Albin 36 owners, any areas of the boat to...

    incline test

My 25 was rafted next to a 24'er, of the same brand make..** I walked down the gunnels between boats, one foot on each gunnel.* The 24 tipped significantly as I stepped down on it.* My 25 didn't move a bit.** The 25 was wider, heavier and had a different shape to the undersides. * It resisted...

    Is a bullhorn worth having?

    * When I was in the USCG Aux, we needed to communicate with disabled boaters.* If the wind was up, they couldn't hear us.* Yelling through a cone helped alot.* The megaphone worked better.* * As with any tool, it's nice to have if you need to communicate with people when it's windy. **...

    Bow V berth noise

Good point on the hull make up and chines. One night, our Bayliner was positively leaping over ferry wakes.* We had a 8 knot spring tide.* We didn't sleep a wink.** In retrospect, I should have recognized this and went across the channel to any one of the harbours.* Live and learn.*** (The...

    Bow V berth noise

How much noise can you expect in the bow, V Berth.* I know that it can get quite noisy some nights when anchored out.** I'm assuming that a bow berth is more quiet in a heavily built trawler.(?)

    Newbie Here

I'm new as well.* I've learned that no two trawlers are alike.* You need to look at the individual boats. Look for a layout that is pleasing to you.* Find a boat that doesn't have water damage to the fuel tanks, decks and house.* There should be records of all the maintenance.* I'm getting...

    Disapointment

It's been tough finding a boat worthy of surveying.** If I can see the faults, why bring the man to the boat.*** I imagine that seeing faults would be useful when discussing the price.

    Disapointment

Side of salon just aft of the front windshield Trawler juice on edge of cabin. I can't see where it's coming from.* None of these brown stains were evident before last week's rain. I pulled the hatch and found teak on top of glass.* Better than most I've looked at. Nice wide deck and...

    Disapointment

The Fu Hwa 34 Europa, with glass decks and cabin top was high on my list of boats.* I like the layout and felt that the integrity of the glass decks would help me avoid a rotted cabin. This afternoon, I visited the boat after a rain and was greatly disappointed to see trawler juice coming out...

Questions about the differences in 34 and 38'ers

    * The work the owners put into some of these boats I looked at*is amazing.* Taking on these repairs is some serious work.* It's clear when they started that they never had any intentions of selling, until the economy tanked.

Questions about the differences in 34 and 38'ers

Well, that gets back to the original question.* What are the advantages to the 34.** I would guess, better fuel mileage?* Shallower draft (good for skinny water along the ICW), less maintenance costs. Less shipping costs (between the coasts, and PNW) My Bayliner (shown left) is remarkable in...

Questions about the differences in 34 and 38'ers

*Thanks.... * The 38 has a double kitchen sink, seperate bathtub away from the head, larger refrigerator, salon.** All nice to have.* All for little or no increase in costs.

Questions about the differences in 34 and 38'ers

That's just it, the market is shaking some of the better boats out at decent prices. The broker thought that the 38 would have better sea keeping due to a longer water line.
