Help With Electronics- Clean Slate, Everythings Gone.

Another opinion: If you go with Garmin or one of the other MFD suppliers, you will spend more but not need to be your own system integrator. You would be able to repeat (probably wirelessly) to PC, tablet, phone. Anybody on board would be able to use the basic functions without your assistance...

    shore power/batteries

Hire an electrician My suggestion - if you do not understand your electrical system, hire a certified marine electrician for as many hours as needed to learn what you have, what you should have, make the changes necessary. As soon as you go beyond a simple 12v boat, the complexity rises...

Be careful w starboard - none of the usual sealers will adhere to it.

Agree, sounds like air in the system.

    Repairing soft decks

Cut out the deck w router. Clean out old core (plywood, balsa, ...). Recite w high density foam, using epoxy to fully adhere bottom and top of new core. Epoxy deck layer back in place. Make pretty. A bit dirty and time consuming but definitely within skills of most boaters. Yard will charge...

    Generator impeller operation question, please

Water pressure far superior to air pressure. Water doesn't compress. If all else fails, fill dinghy foot pump w water. You'll have plenty of force to clear most clogs.

    Dinghy Davit Reinforcement (Stern Rail)

St Croix makes "sportfish mounts," which are vertical struts from underside of transom to deck. Adjustable, with three stainless struts each side. I used them for transom mounted davits on Mainship pilot. Worked perfectly.

    Mainship 350/390

If I was adding a Samson post I would add far more than a piece of glassed-over marine plywood. I added a windlass to a 43' boat. Had an engineer approve my plan, which included tying a backing plate to adjacent bulkhead, with four or five layers of (I believe)1708 fibreglass and West System...

    A/C outlet for 34 Pilot

I have seen several with an additional unit for the cockpit. But...maybe...since you likely only want the helm deck or the cabin cooled at any given time...why not? Has anybody tried this?

Mainship 40 DC - Rear Salon bulkhead

Why 5200? Just curious - why 5200 top and bottom rather than tabbing in w glass/resin?

Will Hacksaw Cut Thru a G4 Chain Link

Let it run! In an emergency, nothing as fast as letting it go. Tie on a fender if you can, will make retrieval much easier.

    Windlass on Pilot Mainship 30

You will be happy to have far more than 5' of chain. I had five times average anchoring depth of chain + at least 200' of braided rode. Hang on all the chain, put out enough rope to eliminate the need for snubber. Sleep all night.

    Towing a Dinghy

Towing Dinghy Most people that now have proper davits or a crane/chocks used to tow. Until that day when the weather went bad quickly and the dinghy became either full of water or upside down. Neither easy to deal with as a squall line passes. Mine was a flying Zodiac spinning around on its...

    Mooring lawsuit?

Umbrella My understanding of Umbrella insurance policy is for additional liability coverage above/beyond other contracted policy(ies). Any such coverage requires underlying P&C/liability policy. Not for "other."

I have never seen jackstands included w boat sale And I have never seen stands included in sale of a yacht. Local practice, perhaps.

    Interesting near collision

Sailboat Skipper At Fault The sailboat was making very little way against wind/current. Was probably headed directly for the ship's course. Should have gybed or tacked away much sooner. A VHF call on Ch 13 is always a quick way to speak to the ship's bridge and agree on a course of action.

    Let's talk deep freezers

Power consumption 100 daily amp-hours? Meaning average 4.1 amp draw over 24 hours? Many of us are looking to solar to enable fridge/freezer. This seems in the range of a decent solar panel array. Thanks.

travelling on the ocean whats considered safe

Glad you made it OK You were fortunate, while conditions are sometimes better than forecast, as often as not the conditions are worse/significantly worse than forecast. Having planned bail-outs is very important. Remembering that many of the Atlantic inlets are unsafe for passage exactly at...
