    A/C sea strainers

We're docked on on the Gulf ICW just west of Pensacola at Perdido Key, and we've had a very hot summer with an extraordinary amount of sea grass washing to shore every still evening and night. We still have our Sea Ray docked next to us that has the standard clamshell bottom strainer to through...

    Show off your pets!

Not a pup, but a parrot Our senior Min Pin passed away last fall after 11 years with us, but we still have our Blue Front Amazon Parrot named Sugar Lips to entertain and keep us company. She has taken to boat life quite well. :) She doesn't mind the easy going rocks that we get and makes sure...

    We're going bigger.

Usually he -- but I'm also comfortable with it and was the first to learn the art of docking with just the shifters on the Sea Ray. :) I'm sure he'll be more often at the helm as we get used to the Commander, but I'll take over to at times just to know that I can if I ever have to.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words. We had a 1975 CC Catalina 251 before the Sea Ray, and really liked that boat! It was our first inboard and we learned a lot from it.

The engines are DD 8V53, and the genny's a Northern Lights 8 KW inside a sound shield. i'm not sure about the trannies.

    We're going bigger.

This is hull 4 out of 10 double cabins that were made in 1966 using fiberglass for the first time for 47 ft Commanders. Not brave enough to attempt to maintain wood of this size in this climate and waters.

    We're going bigger.

We owned the Sea Ray 300 db when we decided to move onto the boat, so even though it was small by liveaboard standards, we were ok with the Sea Ray as our liveaboard trial boat. We figured if we could get on living that tiny, it should work out for us -- we always had the flying bridge if one of...

How Do You Keep Your Boat Cool In The Summer

Would not leave AC units running unatended here in the FL Panhandle. We're on the Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway between two passes, and we get inundated with jelly fish at times. Even with an oversize water pump and sea strainer, they can shut down an AC system in a few hours.

    Where did you grow up?

Wifey B, I am one of the few who didn't grow up around boats. but now couldn't imagine any other way of life. We actually live on our Sea Ray and have a 25ft fishing boat docked next to us. From 0-12, my family lived along a creek in Eastern Washington. Too small for boats, but I learned to fish...

    Show us your Christmas lights!

We didn't enter the local parade, but we're in our own marina's contest. :)

    Any Regrets?

Your entire statement is so right! We've only been living on our boat for a year, but it didn't take long at all to realize exactly what you're talking about. For instance in our case, because we have a smaller boat, it was more important to lose the bottom guest berth and gain storage and room...

    Do you like Magma Grills?

We're going into the 11th month of living on our boat and use our Magma Catalina infrared grill several times a week. I had used a Charbroil infrared grill at my house prior to moving onto the boat so had realistic expectations of the grill's capabilities. The grill is mounted on the back of the...

    2 bodies - 5 still missing

I agree with what you're saying. Our local forecasters always include the marine forecasts too with close to 30,000 boats registered between Escambia and Santa Rosa counties, and with this part of the Gulf having such great fishing and diving opportunities, but we are also well aware that we...

    2 bodies - 5 still missing

We're docked on the Intracoastal Waterway on the Florida end of Perdido Key. We're about 40 miles east of Mobile Bay, and while the Weather Channel and our local TV channel were giving severe weather warnings for the mid and northern end of our county in FL, no mention was made of the wind and...

Why am I so sad that I am going to miss the big storm?

I hear ya. :) The west has mountains, the east has "hills", and down here the best we can do are good size sand dunes! :) I'm just happy that I have been able to experience so much of it. Would have loved to cruise from Seattle to Alaska, but never got the opportunity, so am happy to read the...

Why am I so sad that I am going to miss the big storm?

There's something for everyone all across the U.S. My family spent the first 12 years of my life living on a forty acre farm along a canyon creek outside of Spokane, WA on the dry side of the Cascades. It was beautiful. We had enough snow in the winter to have fun, yet always had the green...

    Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas from the FL Panhandle After adding some lights in the stormy weather yesterday, we're looking forward to a calm sunny Christmas day. Have a great Christmas everyone. Know it isn't a trawler, but we are liveaboards. :)

    Older Boat Financing

We moved onto the boat a few months ago here in Florida. When changing our drivers license address online, we found that Florida accommodates those of us with a PO box address, by having a section for a mailing address and a physical address. The licenses came back mailed to our PO box with our...

    Liveaboard advice for a novice

Yes you can. My MBA professors taught us how to make great predictive and forecasting spreadsheets. There are excel add ins available that perform quite well.

    Making the Jump!

We're doing this right now -- although in a smaller boat than most -- a 30 ft Sedan Bridge. We're both on board with the decision and are cutting dirt ties by selling the house and almost all of the contents. Anything that doesn't fit into the 5x5 storage unit or on the boat is gone or is on its...
