I just bought a 95 42ft. Grand Banks classic and the Raymarine autopilot doesn't work. Before I dive in I'd like to find out where the internal compass/gyro is located on the boat.

Anyone have an idea?

Thanks
Jon

Typically located in hanging locker. Close to centerline, away from engine. But PO could have put it anywhere. Follow the cables. The controller and course computer make up the system. Most likely failure mode is course computer. Check the fuse along with all wiring. Check power at pump with system on. Then start tracing wires back.

In our 36 the compass is under the forward V berth. Is a door that opens for access.

on my older 42 the compass is high on the aft bulhead of the forward head. (the cord goes straight through to the chart/wiring compartment at the helm)

Which course computer do you have?
What is the nature of the malfunction?
(AP doesn't engage? doesn't hold course?)

On my 88 42classic it is under small hatch at base of forward stairway leading to forward stateroom.
