1st winter storm

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

Since golf isn’t really exercise, what do you do for exercise in Florida? Flat walks or road biking or kayaking? That’s always been an issue for me, plus the heat and humidity.

The "A" Buoy off of Gloucester seems to have stopped transmitting, but it's last report at 11:00 am ET was 39 kt winds with gusts to 50 kts, and 17 foot seas.

Wifey B: Seriously, for a moment, we do feel for those of you in the storm area, especially any who lose power as that turns a beautiful snowfall into horrible winter conditions. Thinking of all of you. :)

Lowest temp I saw, just south of Hollywood, (mile marker 1075 plus a little bit) the 29th was 50f. That was about 830am

I was wearing shorts and coat this morning. IF I venture out again, it will be in long pants but still NO SOCKS. :D

I was out yesterday in a vest and short sleeve T shirt, but it had gotten up to 17.

Greetings,
Mr. C. "... vest and short sleeve T shirt...". Not even a chook or choppers eh? Youse yoopers got sisu. Drive safe and if you hit a deer, make sure it's a big one.

Thanks Wifey. As a former boy scout I always try to "Be Prepared." I haven't ventured outside today, too windy and nasty if not necessary. At 5 PM a plow finally game down my street and I was tempted to clear the driveway but with a fire burning in the fireplace and the wind howling, I decided it can wait till tomorrow. Good day for sports and movies on TV and drinks and comfort food.

I was at the grocery store yesterday buying all the bread and milk and there was a guy shopping in a tank top and shorts. (about 20 F yesterday). It's all what you're used to, although somethimes there is something else going on!

Overnight it got down to -7 so when it got up to 27 today it was almost balmy.

Standard practice in Atlanta: Announce any type of storm and everyone drives to the store to stock up on bread and milk. Those without children go to the grocery store to stock up on the alcohol one chooses, maybe snacks for a couple of days.
Now life is very confusing because of the shortage of TP....
Sunday is my grocery store day so I will see what's missing from the shelves this time. Sort of like living in a Communist country with various shortages.
I've noticed a shortage of lobster and filets and gourmet cheeses. Oh well, sometimes life gets difficult.

No power is only a hassle for those unprepaired for the condition.

Horizontal snow blowing by is eye candy for warm well fed folks .

I agree. I think it's not as bad as those down south who lose power in the summer from a hurricane. Speaking of which, 99MPH winds were recorded on Cape Cod yesterday.

Yes the forecasts have finally agreed. 2' of snow and 60 mph winds are expected. The worst of it father east like Newport and Boston. Nor'easter and bomb cyclone are being referenced. Good thing about New England is that by Sunday morning, everthing will be fine. Just need to prep today and hunker down tomorrow, no need to panic or be out driving around on Saturday.
Quite right. We are visiting in central Connecticut. Had about 10 inches here, more on the shoreline. It's a beautiful sunny Sunday morrning.

Beautiful but still very cold. I have to venture out soon to clear the steps and driveway. I'm on the shore and I think we got about 10". Farther east along the shore got closer to 2'. Boston got about 30".

Golf is not exercise? The typical course is four miles long if walked in a straight line. And they are not all flat as many are in Florida. I am in terrific shape at 71yo. How do you explain that I am pretty tired after a round of golf even if I take a cart? And swinging a golf club 80 times is a bit of exercise as well.

You sure it's only 80? lol

+1. Way too much hype by the weather men on TV. It's all about TV ratings.

Well yes and no. I didn't get the 12-18" predicted, but some places did get 2+ feet of snow and hurricane force winds. If it was summer and everyone had boats in the water, I doubt we'd be saying it was just another storm.

Near Gulf Stream horse, near me, no snow
On the boat about 6am, 50F

Groton, CT got 21.5". We spent an hour shoveling the driveway. Now in for hot chocolate. Back out for about another hour to finish the job.

There are these great new inventions called "snow blowers" that would knock out your driveway in minutes. I was a holdout for a long time shoveling. Now every time I use the blower I think it's the best money I've ever spent. And they cost less than almost any boating accessory!

I bought the most powerful one I could when we moved into our current house. I figured it was a direct trade of more money = less time outside moving snow when it's 0*.

Wind gusts topped out at 70 with over two feet of snow,my dock lines are all stretched out but other than that everything was safe and sound, and last week installed Shakespeare the 2020 seawatch antenna so had a nice lazy day relaxing watching tv

Good for you. Glad it turned out to be uneventful.

Wifey B: Some people don't have the ability to prepare. Don't have fireplaces in their apartment. Don't have other sources of heat and some who try other sources end up with fires. Many suffer greatly. What about those using oxygen concentrators or other medical equipment? :ermm:

You are correct to a point. But if I needed electricity for medical equipment to keep me alive, I would surely be prepared for loss of power, storm or not.

Why would it be worse to lose power in the summer ? During the recent ice storm in Texas, over 150 people froze to death. I know people can die from heat, but I think freezing is a greater risk during a winter power outage than heat exhaustion in a summer power outage.

Also, don't forget that as a group of boat owners, we are NOT a good representation of the general public. Lots of people are living paycheck to paycheck. There is a large group of people who depend on getting their kids to school so they can eat a decent breakfast and lunch. A snowstorm means kids stay home so food costs go up. Now mom stays home so income goes down. Something as simple as a school snow day can create a genuine financial hardship for many.

It is reported that when Marie Antionette was told the peasants did not have any bread, she said "Let them eat cake"........and things kind of went down hill from there.....

When we moved to Michigan from Arizona I bought a nice, so I thought, John Deere snowblower. It was horrible to use, my shoulders hurt so badly that I took it back and bought a Sears. It is very easy to use and will cruise through 12”+ easily. The neighbors come over when we get a big snowfall and want to borrow it. I can do our driveway in about 20 minutes if we get a big snow. But I can envision the day when the snowblower goes on Craigslist and we hire someone to plow the drive.
