3" Tank Saver Relieve Valve on your Holding Tank?

How many of the members installed the 3" Tank Saver Relieve Valves on the top of their holding tanks for dockside pumpouts, to keep from oil canning their holding tanks? Are they worth the effort to install? Do they let odors escape? What is the general consensus of these relief valves? I would be installing it on a trailerable boat with a 40 gal. holding tank in a 25' aluminum boat I use for traveling rivers and lakes.

I see no need for one. Just have good vent(s). If the vents are pluggthen you might implode a holding tank. But with clear vent hoses you should not need that. However if you have a filter in the vent it could become clogged and cause the tank to implode on pumpout.

These are something that SeaLand Technology (now Dometic) dreamed up to save boat owners with vent filters from vent blockages when a tank overflow gets them wet, which turns it into a vent blockage. I agree with Dave...you don't need it unless you ignore all the signs of a blocked tank vent--which you can prevent by replacing the "vent" thru-hull with an open bulkhead (aka "mushroom") thru-hull that you can put a hose nozzle against to back flush the vent line on a regular basis..and don't install a vent filter.

As mentioned above, I see no need and would more likely install a 1" vent hose to promote the aerobic process within the content.
