I guess my point is to not use the rudder at all.



Just use the Fwd-N-Reverse + Bow thruster joystick.... and think of yourself in a super market with a shopping cart in reverse.



Once that "clicks" for you, you'll have no problem.

Shopping cart is for twins. OP has a single. Or did I miss something?

Nice video. Side winds in a fairway always scare me about getting ranged down to leeward.

I usually find crabbing down a fairway with a crosswind to be preferable to getting into a tight slip with a crosswind. It just requires keeping track of your drift and increasing your crab angle as you reduce boat speed.
 
If we have a choice we go bow in but with pilings we go past the piling to the boat’s pivot point and then back with the rudder centered and pivot the boat using the thruster. We have two substantial rub rails so a little contact does not matter.
