So... I've been lurking around this site for a few weeks, looks like an informative group. I'm currently boatless, but am looking at a trawler near Annapolis. I'd like some advice on surveyors in the area - would like to find someone competent, thorough, efficient and with knowledge/experience in 20-30 yr old Taiwanese trawlers to do a pre-purchase survey.
My background: Boataholic. Started as a teen in SCal, crewing on commercial fishing boats, ocean racing sailboats, supply boats to the Channel Islands. Commercial diver/instructor in Marina Del Rey (when it was new) for a few years. Got into academics (PhD/MD/MPA) which took me to Hawaii for 10 years then spent most of my professional career in Portland, OR. Owned sailboats, motorsailers, trawler (a Willard Vega), kayaks, row boats, windsurfers, etc., etc. Cruised West Coast (SCal to SF Bay, PDX to Puget Sound/Gulf Islands) and some in Western Pacific (Micronesia). Now retired and relocated to East Coast, looking for comfortable trawler to cruise this area, possibly NY Canals up to Great Lakes - potentially south, if winters stay this cold.
I've got my eye on a decent, but recently somewhat neglected (for a year or so), Monk 36. I've looked it over, but not as detailed as I would like. I see some minor issues (vintage electronics, original fuel tanks, brightwork in poor shape, some punky spots in the wood mast, gel coat oxidation/crazing, bow thruster not working, etc.) but no evidence of water intrusion in deck/hatches/windows/doors. Engine room reasonably maintained. We'll see...
Appreciate any feedback.
