One of the aluminum fasteners on one of my boarding steps has failed/cracked. I suppose I could have the piece fabricated, but am interested in whether there are other solutions. Have you replaced the boarding steps?

You must be talking about the steps located on the sides of the cockpit? I thing it will be hard to find a replacment unless you could find one from a total loss boat etc. I have had some worries about those steps. They appear to be designed for light weighs and the outboard sides press into the boats fiber glass. Repair are new fab. may be your only options

Don't understand... has the step broken or fastener as stated?
Pic would help.

This is one boarding step I dissassembled. On the other boarding step I have, the bracket cracked from the pivot hole to the edge of the bracket.

That bracket should be very easy to fabricate a new one and then have it powder coated. Check with a machine shop.
