In the process of buying a boat with this totally ugly windlass. No markings, any ideas about the manufacturer?
Thanks,
Bob

Looks like the windlass on our prior 1972 sailboat. Simpson-Lawrence Francis 800.

Sailed 12K miles over 5 years, mostly at anchor with 60# plow & 3/8” chain. Always worked, except once - motoring around the tip of Gibraltar when the transmission failed. No wind, strong current pushing us onto “the rock”. Not quite the warm, cozy image portrayed by Prudential. Dropped anchor and several hundred feet of chain - straight down - the rock is pretty steep - but stopped the boat until the port authority sent out a tow. The windlass baulked, so the tow had to wait while we sweated over the manual backup lever to retrieve the anchor.

I have some documentation. PM if you are interested.
