Greatings,
After 45 yrs of owning cruising sailboats I have acquired a 1990 Marine Trader 36 with twin Cummins. It’s real different….
Boat was a bit neglected for a few years by previous owners so I am giving a lot of TLC. Issues mostly cosmetic. The engines are in great shape and start immediately. Had a survey, of course. Electronics are old and basic. I have a spare radar and recent VHF for it. DF is numbers only. That will definitely be replaced with a display next Spring. Bottom was cleaned by diver and anodes replaced 3x each year. Running gear and props in good shape. Docked in Baltimore.
Getting familiar with twin engines. View aft is restricted in this Sundeck model. Strangest thing is steering from so high up above the water. I am so used to being close to the surface and waves. This will take a while to become comfortable. New sounds, new feel in the wind and waves even when tied up. Lots of new sounds to get used to.
It has the typical Taiwan boat problem: Leak damage on the interior around some of the ports. The rain this weekend revealed one real problem among the minor ones. I am learning how to get around and behind the paneling. A fiber optic snake helps, as do a few mirrors…
Tracing wiring from the panel and and cabling from the engine room. A lot of space! I can sit between the engines… Btw, Cummins is great! The 6B5.9M’s are each 115 HP and have info plates attached to them. I call Cummins and give them the serial #s and get great information and support.
I am having it bagged for the winter next month. I will take care of internal issues over the next few months and then finish the external ones during Spring.
Top issue right now is I need a lock for the starboard door! There is none, just the hole for it. Can someone suggest a good source for one that will fit? I will post pix of this and other issues with questions on another post.
Thanks for reading this far. I look forward to participating on this forum.
