We have a 42' trawler with a cruising speed of around 7 knots. Six years ago we did the loop and really liked the Tennessee area. We are now thinking of buying a house off of Kentucky lake and eventually moving our trawler here (currently in Florida).

Obviously we can repeat the loop but were wondering how bad would it be to "salmon" up the Tenn-Tom-Bigbee. Anyone else do this in a slow boat like ours?

Thanks in advance

These guys are a hoot speaking of slow cruising.

I will be heading up in late November or early December. Unless there is flooding, the current isn’t bad, perhaps a 1 1/2 knots in spots. The toughest part of the trip will be the short days, I think. Would love to hear others comments, too.

We went from Homeport (Gulf Shores, Al) up the Tenn-Tom all the way to Ditto Landing in Huntsville, Alabama about a year ago. We enjoyed the trip and generally went around 8-9 knots. Current wasn't too bad at that time of year and we had decent weather.

When you get to the locks above Columbus, call ahead. If you're lucky, they'll get them ready for you. We would cruise straight in and they'd shut the locks behind us as we tied up. We made it through 6 locks in one day that way.

Of course we were lucky and there weren't any tows on our stretch of the river that day.

You shouldn't have any problems with the current from July on.
Spring rainstorms can be a problematic. But, at any other time it should be oaky.

Nice new photo of your new baby.

Thanks everyone for the info, looks like a late summer to fall trip would be the easiest. Now to find a house...
