I think I paid around $150 for my Magellen 310 in 1995. I see one on Ebay today for $18.99. :D

Yea, it would be cheaper just throw it away. I keep my Magellan 330M for "just incase" and to show others what I used in the olden days. :D

What the hell is "hand help." You need help alright, with proof reading what you sent.

What the hell makes you think I miss-typed it????

From reading the various replies, I might be the "odd man out".
On board we have 2 dedicated Raymarine chartplotters operating independently, an iPad with GPS, and paper charts. In addition, we also carry the Richardsons (third party production of charts, ports, and pictures of harbour entries, telephone numbers etc)", for the lake we are on.

Interesting, at least 3 of the 5 get used every time we depart.

Overkill - probably.

Not overkill if you avoid hull damage, injury or loss of life.

IPad

I have an older iPad I’ve used for back up (or sometimes primary) navigation for years, but it has an older OS that won’t update and won’t let it download the newest apps.

I’m thinking of updating to a new one, but don’t know which one. It needs to have the cell phone connection so it can get data on the water, right? My current iPad has cell connection.

The iPads with cellphone capability also have a built in gps. You can get a very nice 12.9 in display with 500 gig of memory for around $1200. I use Navionics on it. I don’t go anywhere without it on and monitoring it. You can get a 10.9 in for a few hundred dollars less if the 12.9 is too large.

It does use the cellular signal for almost instant triangulation. GPS alone can take a few minutes. Sometimes that can be too long. It may switch over to gps after starting with cell. Navionics support can verify this.

I got hit by a car about six months ago, and rolled my Jeep about 5 times after the impact. In addition to the Jeep being totaled, my iPad and mini-Ipad, both of which had my now unobtainable Garmin blue charts programs on them, along with thousand of entries and notes on them, were also totaled in the crash.

In my wildest dreams, I never figured on losing both of my primary handheld navigation devices that way. I was always afraid of dropping them overboard. :D
