The cracked exhaust hose for the single Perkins of my 1985 Taiwan trawler needs to be replaced. Only the first 3 feet beyond the water lift are visible, the hose than bends up and back toward the stern, passing through a bulkhead. It then goes behind the cabinets/drawers in the aft cabin. How is access made to wrestle a 3" hose back to the exit on the transom? My though is to open access points in the back of the cabinets. No scars would be visible if the access cuts were made behind the drawers but that only gives 4 or 5 inches of opening. Any suggestions?

On our previous boat I had to replace the clamps on the exhaust hose. There were hatches in each cabinet that allowed access to the hose. If you can’t get good access then maybe try attaching the new hose to the old and pull it through that way. The old hose is likely to be quite stiff so it may or may not work but if it doesn’t work then you will have to get out a saw and cut access holes. Good luck.

Also look at the Vetus brand hose. Very easy to work with, completely EPDM rubber and excellent bend radius.

Any chance of running rigid fiberglass exhaust tubing for much of the way? Also have 45-degree and 90-degree fiberglass elbows.

Pictures are always helpful (we TF'ers love photographic boat porn).

Thanks for your thoughts, but no access for solid tube. The longest portion of hose runs between the hull and the cabinets with a fuel tank 2 feet from one end and the transom at the other. There are fibreglas sections on the gen set so I'm aware how useful the stuff is.

As said above I would use a high grade quality hose so you don’t have to replace it again in the near future.
