Years ago I was handling two claims at Ted Hood’s big yard and complex at the Melville Boat Basin in Rhode Island near Portsmouth on Narragansett Bay. It was March sometime and five or six boats on jackstands toppled like dominoes on top of each other. This location is known for its wind. All boats had their stands cross chained but several lacked wood pads under the legs and the newly constructed asphalt lot they were stationed on allowed the others to sink in. All boats were Winterized with full covers and sail vessels still had masts stepped and rigged. Apparently the first one toppled hitting the next and the next all of which went over like dominoes until the last boat which stopped the chain reaction. It was a Grand Banks 42 which stood fast on her blocks and stands. The ultimate of stability in a strange sort of way.

Thanks for sharing G. Kept my boat in NEB this summer. Glad I’m not storing there this winter.

Wasn’t very funny was it. Oh well can’t even get a courtesy laugh with this tough crowd. But it was true

I haven’t been down there since the Hinckley brats bought out Ted Hood. So is NEB New England Boatworks ?

I thought that you were going to say that the GB got rolled over but then righted itself. Now that would be impressive stability.

Yes but owned by Safe Harbor.

What kind of anchor did it have? And was it single or twin engine?

So did it have a gyro stabilizer running??

:lol:HOLLYWOOD

It very corporate now. You have a personal representative assigned to you who speaks to a “project manager” who then sends out the work to a tech or team. . Probably have the titles wrong. Unlike the past you do not get to speak with the people doing the work. So you have trouble planning and budgeting anything you want them to do. Its cumbersome. But the pool is gorgeous and the bathrooms spiffy. They even hav a barbecue patio under a tent. They’re building more buildings so must be doing ok financially. Over the years been places where the techs get to know you and look out for you. Even try to save you money and keep you safe. Yard tell you when work was being don so you could watch and learn.

I think the first time I saw this model of running a yard/marina was when Brewers started their march North. Project managers, different billing formats and landscaped “park” like grounds. There was some resistance from old timers who knew what they wanted and how it was done and resented not being able to get involved in the work. But more and more new owners and old timers are adjusting and like clean heads, laundry rooms, good parking and picnic areas. When I worked at Merrill Stevens years ago they dealt with lots of big yachts with professional captains or yacht management people and they wanted liaisons or go-betweens to go over the job and have two hour lunches with. I think this has been standard with bigger yachts and is spilling over.

Agree Rick also the credit card captains like it. It’s the wave of the future as chains take over more marinas and yards. Still I fart dust but need to learn powerboat skills. So truly miss the old school way of doing things.

Friend bought a Voyager cat, mid 50’. Put it in charter service in the BVIs. Was hauled for a hurricane. Another identical boat landed exactly on top of it. Both were totaled. Very stable. Didn’t help.
