Inflatable SUP

The friendliest place on the web for anyone who enjoys boating.

We usta go "pozzin" in cars by the theaters and drive in's when I was in my teens. Very pretentious indeed. Just trying to be cool.

Now I see grown men (and some silly girls) pozzin on oversized cheap surfboards. I think that's just as pretentious as we were in cars. So whadduh pretening to do or be? I see it as a fad and the reason it's a fad and cool is because its a very recent development or happening. As soon as it's old (a few years old) nobody will be doing it.

Wait till people start flying around on electric drone-like things. That will be "way cool" and the biggest fad binge of all time. But that will probably not fad-phase out as they will not only be outrageously fad-cool but enable local transportation people have only dreamed about. I may even be part of the fad.

Right now fads are cool. Even dogs are cool. Watch TV and count the commercials that do not have dogs featured in them. Very few. I love to see dogs. But I don't like to see them in clothing stores and apparently they alow them in food stores like Safeway. That's nuts. Hopefully it's a fad too and will pass.

Eric

Your dating yourself with cars at the drive in (to younger guys that not an ATM but a joint to eat when in your car with girls on skates to take your order and deliver) it was the place to see and be seen while cruising the streets. Even the cops knew us!

Eric, paddleboard evolution was inevitable. [emoji57]

It really is good exercise-- the legs and "core" get a workout, along with your back, arms, shoulders, etc. Like I said earlier, paddling in a canoe or kayak doesn't thrill me because it hurts my back.

I went to Hawaii two years ago and learned to catch some surf on a paddleboard, and that was really interesting. You can paddleboard into waves way earlier than a surfer, which is why surfers don't appreciate paddleboarders stealing their waves.

Dude,
The evolution will be short.

Bigfish,
Haha never seen the drive-in girls on skates.

Chris,
Glad you liked it.

Sociology class is dismissed.

Eric

Are you sayin you were at drive ins before the invention of the wheel? LOL

I ate some Dick's Drive In $.19 hamburgers in Seattle.

There were lots of wheels then .... I was one of them.

The hamburgers aren't $0.19 anymore, but I have been to a few car meet ups there back when I was driving my 94 RX7

Jeez, lighten up Eric! Just peeps enjoying themselves. Who gives a hoot if its a fad? Certainly not a reason to refrain from fun..

S of F,
Yup .. could be I needed that. But they just seem so silly and can't see any advantage worth having. Very high wetted surface and one can't make anything except a weak paddle stroke they can't be anything but slow.

There could be some plus's. Low windage of the hull may seem an advantage but the paddler standing ruin's that. Oh they have low windage on top of your car and may be able to be stacked. Don't need flotation. Lighter? Cheaper than a propper canoe. What other advantage is there other than the fact that they are cool because they are a new thing?

Just for reference, paddleboards aren't new. In the South Seas, Hawaii, etc they have had a practical application back before synthetic materials...easy to cross a lagoon, or one can paddle out "around" the surfable wave breaks, and catch the waves back in. The paddle, being longer, actually gives the paddler a long, strong stroke with core muscles. (plus leg strength).

They don't fill with water like a traditional kayak or canoe, either.

I'm not sure about knocking them so much...its being judgmental of others' interests, and so seems unnecessary. "If you can't say something nice..."

Wifey B: You've never tried one, I'd bet. Never will. So you'll never know. We got ours out this afternoon and paddled around plus our kayaks. These things are called toys. Most people like toys. Some like many different kinds of toys. Not a fad, they're fun. Toys aren't a fad, just getting better and better. Do you not have any toys you like to play with? ;)

Do you not have any toys? Poor Nomad. Oh, you have anchors. You try everything possible and sure seems silly to me. I like my toys better than yours. :D

If ever in Key West, there's a night time paddleboard (or sit-on-top kayak) tour in one of the shallow lagoons. They're rigged with bright underwater lights, so you really see a lot of sea life that wouldn't be visible during the day, plus it's not so hot outside. Octopus, lobster, etc. We really enjoyed it...about 90 minutes. It's called "Ibis Bay" I think.

WifeyB,
That wasn't very nice. You've said other abrasive things to me .. lets call it three strikes ... bye ....

Wifey B: It's so wonderful. Exclusive Nighttime Ocean Adventures, Key West Kayak

You might be a nice guy in person, but you are a grumpy old man on the internet. I thought she was being pretty gentle while making some good points about you being close-minded. Its condescending of you to dismiss someone else's toy or hobby as a fad or somehow pretentious. Were you being pretentious when you first tried a canoe way back? Not the most efficient form of transportation ever invented.

Feel free to avoid anything new or different, if you wish, but when you criticize others for their hobbies and toys it just shows that you might be out of touch and more than a bit grumpy. Lighten up and try something new every now and again. You might accidentally find out that you are having fun.

Wifey B: Also in Titusville, night kayaking in a luminescent bay. Another in Merritt Island. The absolute most incredible ones are in Puerto Rico. :D

Ok everyone...not up to me, but probably best to close out this here SUP thread. Stress & tension make our liver enzymes go way up...not healthy!
Fortunately, besides being drop-dead gorgeous, my bride also teaches yoga. Time for a few Sun Salutations. Say it with me: OMMMMMMM!

Wifey B: I think most of us are enjoying the thread. Some are even learning. SUP's are fun and aren't just for kids. I know lots here have kayaks. Canoes seem to have sort of gone their own way like blocking one member's way out to the Ohio but I'm guessing too bulky and heavy for most here. We have a 22 year old and her 21 year old friend challenge her 59 year old grandfather and his 56 year old wife to a paddleboard race. They didn't win but they said it was a lot more fun than they thought and they headed on up the canal on theirs and didn't return for an hour or so. :)

I was enjoying the banter and never thought it reached the point of insults then again I'm a little slow and never take myself seriously.

Wifey B: Any of the fireworks tonight visible to you at home? I would think some have to be. :)

Yes ma'am, lots but with bullets being shot up and coming back down who knows where I try to not stay out in the open. You guys probably see more as your close to the beach. I won't make it to midnight. :)

Wifey B: Yes, all over now. But we had a great view. Noisy. :)

WifeyB

Sounds like you should have had a party. :)

Not being a buzz-kill...I'm all for SUPs and the discussion. Just hate to see people get amped up with each other on a thread.

I didn't know much about inflatable boards until this so I agree about learning...solid boards are a lot of fun and I'm sure these are too.

Dreamer,
As per a good discussion I'd just like to hear somebody admit that ergonomically standing while paddling does not result in nearly the mechanical advantage of a shorter paddle and a lower paddling position.
And secondly I think it's obvious the wetted surface of the board is much greater than that of a canoe. Much wider too.
So as a paddle boat with good performance they are poor compared to a canoe.

If this was an objective discussion several would agree that the above is true. So this is not a discussion but friendly and unfriendly banter.
