Kadey Krogen 36 Manatee #46
Boat is an '86 & is new to us.* Surveyor said the steering is harder than it should be, we can feel a "growling" or chattering as we turn the wheel.** I have recently been on 2 other Manatees & both have smoother & more easily turning wheels.

The rudder turned free & smooth when disconnected at haulout for hull*repairs post purchase so I think steering hardness is in the pump.

I asked the repair facility to evaluate the steering, they found nothing wrong other than it turned hard.* They offered to replace the steering pump at $700.

From the pictures, can you tell me what we have?

I've googled all the data I can read on the pump & don't find any #s that seem to match.

Thx, Philip

Has anyone checked to see if the system is completely filled with fluid or any air trapped in the system?

I would look for an obstruction , collapsed hose , or kink in crap nylon tubing.

I'm not familiar with that particular system... but you might look for a pressure chamber that keeps the fluid pressurized....if the pressure is too high, then its going to cause rough steering, if there is too little pressure, the wheel will turn but the rudder won't, or will turn verrrrryy slowly. If there is a pressure chamber....don't expect it to be where it is easily seen..... Ours is under the bed in that aft cabin.....
