The manual lists the oil filter for the Kohler 6EOD genset it as a Kohler GM40999.

I couldn't find any cross-reference so I bought two online. They had black security labels wrapped around them. I removed one to reveal that the filter is a Perkins 140517030, which cross-references to many brands of replacement filters.

I'm sure someone out there knew this, and that it is written somewhere, but since I couldn't find it (except by guessing based upon the engine) and didn't want to take the generator offline to eyeball a match...

...I figured I'd post it here for posterity. That way, at the least, I can Google for it in 6 months. :)

I've been around diesels for a long time. No oem makes their own filters, even the big ones. You easily find a spin on filter by the center thread and the seal diameter. Most come in three lengths. The longer ones clean the oil better because it passes thru the filter slower. The long ones also catch more water.

Filter catalogs usually have the thread and seal diameters listed in the back pages.

And Perkins didn't make the filter either.

Hey Lepke,

Thanks. And, yep. And, I could take a good guess because it looks to be a series 400 Perkins engine.

But, I was surprised I didn't see the match on the Web anywhere, so wanted to be cautious.

As far as I know, there are 5 different thread combinations for oil filters:

3/4" - 16
18 - 1.5 mm
13/16" - 16
20 X 1.5 mm
22 X 1.5 mm

Variations are diameter, length and filter media. If room is available a larger filter will provide more filtration. A remote oil filter arrangement would allow larger filters.

Hey Syjos,

Thanks!

I just didn't want to take the old one off before I had a new one in hand. My goal was just to do a quick oil change, replacing like with like.

Some filters include a check valve , so the oil wont drain back.
