Even "going slow," things happen. Following commissioning previous boat, I took delivery of it and cruised from the boatyard to my slip, about 40 miles away. Since it was an overcast and cold day, all the piloting was done from the pilot house. Approaching the fairway to my slip and having minimal knowledge of how the boat handled, I decided to pilot from the upper station, for its better visibility and to go slow. Little did I know that the engine controls on the bridge were mistakenly the reverse from those in the pilothouse. Needing to turn to port to line up for my slip, it was a scary moment when putting the port engine into reverse, the boat started turning to starboard. The natural inclination of increasing the throttle on the port engine probably didn't help. Got lucky. Split second decision. Threw them both in reverse and stopped the boat. Frayed nerves, but didn't hit anything.
