Hello to all,

Well I've gone and bought a
Roughwater Boats, Trawlers, Ed Monk, Monk Design,Boats, Cruisers, Puget Sound, Diesel Trawlers, Trawlers, Roughwater
1974 35' Roughwater monk style Pilothouse. with a Ford Lehman 120. This is a big step for our family and we are looking forward to trips in and around us and eventually to Desolation Sound. We live in Black Creek near Pacific Playgrounds Marina. (between Comox & Campbell River) I'm new to boating on this scale and I've enrolled in the power squadron course starting later this month to keep the family safe. We are keeping the boat in the marina for the month of October and then we will get it hauled and put in our driveway so I can address some issues leaky windows that need re-bedding and teak that needs attention. My first couple of experiences with fellow boaters has been a great indication of how kind and helpful random people are that you meet on the dock. From a someone I just met giving me a fitting so I didn't have to go to the marina shop, to Alain B, who pulled up in his dingy to say hello, and ended up helping me change my oil and who I ended up asking to pay to accompany me on the trip from Cowichan Bay to Saratoga Beach. We did it in 2 beautifully calm days and Alain's 10 years Coast Guard experience and general boat knowledge was extremely valuable. I learned a ton of stuff over the 2 days and the highlight was passing through Dodd Narrows. I had many questions for Alain while cruising along at 6.5 knots and he had lots of answers and advise. I had a good chance to figure out most of the boat systems, but there were some things I didn't figure out. I know that I'm going to have likely lots of questions for some of you out there and I appreciate any assistance.
Thanks Jeff

Welcome neighbour, my boat is moored in Comox.

The first thing I would suggest after you have done some repairs is enter your boat into the Victoria Classic Boat show held on the labour day weekend. If you are intimated you can join up with me and go down to Victoria together. I had my boat entered this year but had to withdraw as the refit work wasn't completed. I plan on entering in 2020. The fee is reasonable and includes 3 or 4 nights at the marina across from the Empress Hotel at roughly $150.

I wouldn't suggest this if I didn't love your boat! I am curious what marina are you using?

Welcome aboard and congrats on your new boat. You look to be a great new member since you already gave us some new boat porn (photos).

I would be interested in the Victoria Classic Boat Show. I like the idea of going down together. We are at the Pacific Playgrounds Marina in Black Creek.

You are going to get a lot of advice on this forum - some good - some not so good. You and your family are setting out on a wonderful journey. Being a trawler owner opens you up to a myriad of questions. experiences, and lots of things that quite frankly are only understood on the water.

You have already started this journey with a well founded boat. That's the first lesson and you did well.

Speaking as one Trawler owner to another - spend a LOT of time in the engine room. I have twins but that matters not if neither engine has been maintained.

Good luck and I have the most sincere hope that you and your family have only wonderful experiences on your new acquisition.

Welcome! Beautiful boat you have there. You are also living in an ideal part of the world for using that boat.

Your engine room looks very clean and pretty, that’s a good sign.

Will that boat actually plane as shown in the pics at 2500RPM? I have the same eng in a CHB but I don't think 300 HP would plane this thing!

+1. It all starts there for me. Everything flows from there, if its tidy and clean, you can work on it, spot problems early, and in general spend more of your time on the rest of the boat and less time worrying!

Hello to all,

Well I've gone and bought a

1974 35' Roughwater monk style Pilothouse.

She is absolutely gorgeous. Congrats and welcome to TF! You are lucky to be based so close to the best cruising grounds in the world, and with a well found boat you'll have great times.

welcome aboard! Very nice RW,especially because it has the FL rather than the 8.2 DD that were put in a lot of those boats. Looks clean and well maintained.

No, This boat does not plane as far as I know. She cruises at 7 knots at 1700 rpm.

One pic in the listing shows it stepping out pretty fast and lists a top speed of 17 mph.

Nice! Welcome aboard!

A 35 foot boat with 120 hp would I think need a Jesus miracle to plane. My 28 1/2 foot boat with its old motor of 240 hp couldn't plane, top speed of 11 knots. With my new motor of 350 hp, it will plane.

A 35-foot boat that can't plane with 120 hp, 80 would have been more than enough.

Congratulations ! Beautiful boat.

Welcome!! I saw that ad for the Roughwater, looks well maintained and she's a beauty!! Hope to see you up there, my favorite cruising grounds. As others have said, the ER looks spotless, you are off to a great start.

Beautiful boat really beautiful looks a lot like our Super van Crafts outstanding

Nice boat! We just purchased a 1973 Roughwater 35’ in Semiahmoo this past fall and are looking forward to meeting some fellow RW owners!

New Boat

Thanks for the message. I look around online and see quite a few 37 and 41 footers but not too many 35's. Would love to hear more details about your boat and see some pictures.
Cheers,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,
I have a family also, 3 teenagers. We’ve been to Desolation Sound a few times and they have grown up with week long trips to the Gulf Islands albeit on my parent’s boat 58’ Symbol. They sold it a few years ago. We explored the San Juans as long as we could in a 1989 SeaRay 20’ cuddy cabin. Kids hanging out in hammocks and camping on Sucia Island. Only an hour away from Bellingham at 25 knots
I only have a couple of pics of the interior but here is a link to the Ad:
Cheers!
