I have come to the conclusion that a boat will be whatever you want to call it.
People ask you 'what kind of boat?" It is my boat so I call it a "Bonedoc designed boat."
When you finish upgrading it, as necessary, it will be a 'one of a kind boat'.

I do love the look of your boat, btw. How is it kept? Wet slip for the season or lifted or trailered? Here's mine - show us yours. I see the mooring in your photo, but is it yours?

That is a fine engine, and I have it here. My boat weight at around 12K pounds is likely significantly more than yours, so at around 80% load of 2900-3000 RPM, I bet you scoot right along. Are you and the engine well acquainted? Coming from a pair of rock-steady naturally aspirated 120HP Lehmans, it was quite a learning curve for me to come up to speed with this beast. Boatdiesel.com and this forum were quite helpful. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. I have installed a Floscan and can give you fuel flow numbers for my boat as a starting point for you should you like. My latest mod was to remove the potentially problematic and useless air heating coils in the intercooler - lot of talk on baotdiesel about it.

The engine alarm system installed on my boat sucked. So I added this to tell me just what is going on. (second photo) and do add an exhaust heat alarm if not already done - easy peasy. Wish I had had mine when the seawater pump outlet hose blew a couple years back (it's silicone now). The engine is worth ALL the preventive medicine you can apply!

Do we have an Ellis sub-forum? Oh. well if not subscribe to the Marlowe/Mainship sub-forum where there are a few Mainship Pilot owners with some similarity in design/size which just might help you out from time to time.

Thanks all. Here's a few pictures. Yes the boat is on a mooring on the north shore on Long Island now. It cruises at 17 and hits 25 at wot. Love it. Pulling it to driveway this week and will start punch list!

Absolutely..! You know, if I was ever in the position again to own a boat, and could afford it, I think I'd be happy with a MacGregor 26. Then I could just keep in at home, on trailer. Keep it simple. Plenty good for overnighting here and there. And I could zoom around at 20kn if I wanted to, or just sit back and sail in beautiful silence. Just sayin'...

Beautiful boat! I was amazed at the number of traditional, authentic designs I saw on the water in New England and Chesapeake when I bought my boat in Bristol and brought it south. Visiting Bristol, the Herreshoff museum, and seeing the nautical heritage of New England present on the water was just as beautiful as the shoreline, architecture and friendly people up there. Thanks for sharing the additional pictures! Your Ellis has that "whiff of workboat" that is so pleasing to the eye - a head-turner in any harbor! Wishing I had a glass of Narragansett beer in hand to toast you and your new boat!

All boats are a compromise in certain areas, but the MacGregor seems to be the worst of both worlds in my opinion.

Welcome aboard. I not only have an Ellis 28, in my case an Extended Hardtop, but we’re practically neighbors. My Ellis, Finale, winters at Hodgdon Yacht Services on Southport Island and lives in a slip there summers.

We bought her after we decided that our days of cruising to the Bahamas in our Brewer 12.8 cutter we’re coming to an end. We love her. She’s perfect for the cruising that we at 77 want to do.

Last winter I re-powered her and since I’ve owned her we’ve had her Awlgripped flag blue and done many other upgrades. We spend about 6 weeks aboard every summer cruising the Maine coast.
