Put in a new shut-off relay about two years ago. Failed again this summer and I have to open the hatch and push the rod/lever ahead to stop the engine. It could even be the switch. I have thought of putting in a cable and button that one pulls to kill the engine. It looks like I could rig this nicely with a metal plate for a base at the top front of the engine and run the cable up through the floor adjacent to the very bottom of the instrument panel. The solenoid would have to be removed to do this. Comments?

I recently went the other direction on my Perkins 4.236 75hp. Cable stop was pretty stiff and mounted in the thin panel where the engine instruments were. Always felt like I was going to yank the panel out. But it was certainly reliable. Solenoid was mildly expensive from Perkins but I still bought a backup.

Good luck with whatever you decide

I have both. The pull cable mounts along side the solenoid and is used if the solenoid fails. Nice to have the backup in place and functioning just in case.

Why is the relay failing? Maybe you are dealing with high resistance / poor connection that is killing the relay. I’d look for the problem before re inventing the wheel. We have had our 135 Lehman for 5 full years. Never a relay failure……yet. Lol

Maybe the relay cannot handle the current that the solenoid draws.
Have you ever compared the ratings.
