In November I will ship my trawler from Genoa, Italy to Port of Palm Beach, Florida. I would appreciate recommendations for a good yard for storage on the hard in December and January. I prefer a yard on Florida's East Coast within one hundred miles of Port of Palm Beach.

There are several yards on the St Lucie canal to the east and the Caloosahatchee Canal to the west of Lake Okeechobee that offer reasonable on the hard storage. For sure you have to get out of Palm Beach to find reasonable.

Glades Boat Storage in Moore Haven is one of them.

I am living aboard my boat in the DIY work yard there currently and will vouch for them 100%

Fees are quite reasonable, although it does come with a separate but easily bearable cost: They are literally in the middle of nowhere. You're 20 miles from real groceries - there's a Dollar General about 5 miles away, but they don't have a huge selection - and you're 50 miles from the nearest Home Depot and West Marine. Amazon does find a way to get Prime deliveries here in two days for the most part though. If you don't have a vehicle, you will need to get rides from someone when necessary - there is no Uber.

Most importantly for me, the community here is awesome. Lots of folks living here and working on their boats, and I haven't met anyone I don't like. And the office has been responsive and helpful when I've needed them.

If you're just looking for storage - none of that may be important to you - but they also have the best haul and storage rates I've seen in the state.

In Palm Beach Gardens, just north of West Palm there are two. Both are less than 10 miles from Port of Palm Beach

1- Hemingway's Boatyard
2- Seminole Marine - I've hauled there

Near the Port of Palm Beach (basically next to the port) there's
3- Cracker Boy Marina.

Thank you David, Growler, and Phil. Excellent advice.

You can try Indiantown Marina also. They will be closer than Moorehaven. There is also a new huge yard along that same stretch of the Okeechobee waterway. Have no idea of the rates, but Indiantown used to be reasonable.

The Glades is all booked up for long term storage, I'm on a waiting list . There is availability in the work yard with a 2 month limit .

I think this is accurate - they were quite reasonable on storage IIRC - but not so much in the work yard.

Interesting.

They've hauled at least ten boats out of storage either to the yard or into the water in the last two weeks. And from speaking to the ones on the hard, they're destined for the water until next summer once they get their bottoms painted.

I wonder if they have long-term agreements that reserve their spots in the storage area during the season. I might ask around and see what I can find out.

Also, the storage area is sort of depressing to look at. There are so many awesome boats out there just rotting away on stands. I wonder if they're still getting paid for the space or if they're just taking up space and the yard owners can't do anything with them...

We weren't told anything about a workyard time limit when we hauled either - wonder if that's something new. I know that they've been moving boats where work isn't actively being done as there were quite a few that appeared to be deserted and were moved to storage. But there are people in the workyard that have been here for years. One guy has an entire kitchen setup on the ground outside his boat.

I certainly don't want to be on land at all - but we have enough work to last until at least next March.

I had originally tried to take my buddies past March reservation since he lost his boat in the hurricane but we were informed by the Glades that that's not how they schedule and I had to get on the wait list which was a year out back in March.

When i called in July for a September haul out for repairs they said no problem but there was a 2 month limit in the work yard . I could understand being familiar from past experience's at the yard and knowing there were some people who lived at the yard for years and there was a ton of hurricane boats needing repair.

I inquired about the long term storage for my sailboat in July as they are much further inland and half the rate as my storage in Rotunda. They said no room and weren't thrilled about putting me on a waiting list.

I rode out there to talk with my buddy Andy who runs the repair shop in the back and observed there was some storage spots open yet, but like you said maybe reserved and paid year round.

Yea that storage yard is depressing , 8 years ago my buddy spent a year in back with Andy redoing his 41 Pedrick sailboat and we stayed out there early in the project and I would walk around the storage at dusk looking at all the Dying boats . I bet 25% of those boats today were there 8 years ago and before .

Yeah there's still at least 8 to 10 boats that have been here since we got here in September that are sitting in the work yard and no one has lifted a finger. Most of the rest are getting worked on sometimes - and some every day. I will say that a few minutes ago, I saw a couple of guys riding the yard looking and pointing at boats.

Like I said - no one mentioned a two-month limit when we got here, In fact, I remember telling them we'd be here until spring. As of Wednesday, we have been here two months so I hope they don't ask us to leave - that would suck as we are nowhere near ready to get back in the water and have nowhere to go.

It sucks what people let happen to boats. I realize that sometimes it's not their fault. Former captain of ours died and the boat got stuck in probate for two years because of some squabbles about ownership. But I feel like most of the time, it's just too much, and instead of selling it, they hold on to it and swear they're going to do something with it until it's just a shell.

Not just yards - happens in marinas as well - and lots of them sitting at anchor pretty much anywhere you can drop a hook near a lot of the cities we've been to.

Sad.

Yea sounds like they relaxed the rules again, still the best deal on yard work and storage around though the hike for groceries and supplies gets old if you have to run more than once a week .

I put off my September haul because of the heat. Going to schedule for early December .

I looked at a fair share of hurricane boats at auction that were 25-35 foot home kept lift boats that were 250-350 thousand 3-5 year old boats that were in decrepit shape before the hurricane damage . Seen many at the marinas that were 1/2 million $ boats left to rot and seldom visited or cleaned.

I have delivered boats to all of the above mentioned yards. Crackerboy is next-door to the port of palm beach. Nice yard, $$$$. Seminole Boat Yard is 5 mi N. on the ICW. Also nice, more space, better area.$$$. Hemingways' is just N of Seminole Yard. Smaller yard, not really for storage. $$$
Going north, (and west) Hinckley Yacht Service & storage $$$$ (its a hinckley of course)
Going west on the St.Lucie River; River Forest Stuart, climate controled storage, Very nice, spotless yard, $$$$ may have minimum 5 month charge.
Indiantown Marine Center (new) roughly 55mi. from P of PB by sea, clean gravel yard, lots of storage area, $$$
Indiantown Marina; $$ Been there for years, 2mi farther W, storage in maintained grassy yard, separate work area, friendly folks
Farther N. in Ft. Pierce (55mi.) Crackerboy Boat Works $$$, not much storage space
Heritage Boat Yard just N, of Crackerboy. (I have no experience with this yard)

Hope this helps, and if you need someone to meet the ship, I work with 7 Star and DYT often.

The crackerboy's are more for quick do-it-yourself work, they aren't priced for long term storage in my experience. The Heritage boat yard Steve1.0 mentions is really Riverside Marina, the lowest of the low end and I don't think you want to take a Nordhaven in there, I wouldn't.
My best recommendation is Indiantown Marine Center. New, huge, 2 travel lifts and lots of room.
