Really appreciate the forum; top notch, have been reading for years!

I am currently in the process of repowering a 1975 Tollycraft 26. Bought for $500…no engine/drive

Repowering with 46hp diesel…have replaced cutlass bearings and built vee drive couplings. Using a short driveshaft from engine to vee drive. Custom fabrication of engine mounts…engine beds.

Will be slow ‘trawler’ A bit worried about rudder control at these low speeds….

Weld material to rudder for more low speed control?

Welcome aboard. Agree that you will likely need more rudder area. At that speed being smooth should not really matter that much. Keep use informed as to how the repower is going. Also we love photos.

Yes, I used to have a 1974 26 Tolly and even at normal 13 kt cruising speed the rudder authority was lacking especially in any kind of following sea. I think the V-drive models had a bit more clearance to run a larger prop that could hopefully push more water across a larger rudder than the direct drive ones like I had.

Good luck and as mentioned, pictures are good! Those are tough boats that pack a lot into a small package, we enjoyed ours.

My friend the late Capt. John Aydelotte repowered a Tolly 26 about 15 years ago. Can't recall the exact motor, but it was big and it was gas. That boat would do 35 on flat seas. He said he could go from Cornet Bay/Deception Pass to Friday Harbor in less than 30 minutes...

Couldn’t afford that gasoline fuel burn at today’s price. Thanks for the info, never thought a Tolly 26 could do that speed!

I run a small ‘ma & pa’ gold mine so have a ‘fleet’ of diesel engines. Up to a Cat C12 in our single axle sleeper semi (bumper pull hitch has been set up to pull boat trailer) We would be happy at 6 knots…

58 years old so no worries about speed (lol)..

I am building engine beds so that if engine fails a Beta can be swapped in…
