Volvo penta d4-300 propeller windmill

Hello I have a boat with 2019 d4-300s in it….long story but had a turbo fail and came home on one engine….we ended up using a line to secure the dead prop so it wouldn’t windmill but curious if that is necessary….shaft seal has a scoop and uses water to cool but that would have been fine…transmission is an oil bath mostly but my mechanic said there could be a gear oil pump or some part of it need to be running in order to prevent damage? Thoughts? Thanks

Some gears can free wheel, some others, not so much. You can look at the gear manufacturers specs and they should say if you need to secure the shaft.
Or, post the type of gears here, someone may have the information you need.
