We all, I suspect, sometimes wonder just what all might be wrong with our boat. A detailed list of exactly what all needs to be fixed would come in handy.

Well, I have found a way to do that, which doesn't cost anything at all, and results in a very complete list of everything that is wrong. So I figured that I should share this information.

Just list your boat for sale, and wait for someone to come look at it. Then, get yourself a notepad and a pencil and just follow them around. They will gleefully point out to you every little blemish and deficiency, at no charge to you.

Correction -- there is a slight charge. The blow to your ego, for having the nerve to even list such a piece of junk and waste their valuable time looking at it!

I have always maintained a complete list of the boat's equipment including model and serial number of EVERYTHING. That's what's wrong with my boat - everything.

LOL.

For me it's a mix of stuff that is actually wrong, things that are due for maintenance, and things that either aren't designed well or bug me.

Currently, I look something like this:

Wrong: The finish on the vinyl in the forward cabin is peeling and looks like crap. Still not sure how I plan to address it yet. Living with it for now.

Due for maintenance: Ready for my 1,000 hour service. Starting Monday on servicing all coolers, heat exchangers, raw water pump rebuilds, coolant flush, cleaning up small spots of corrosion, replacing the seal on one of my shafts, checking elbows and mixers (I think they are OK), hose replacement as needed, valve adjustments etc.

Bugs me: Switching port side to a serpentine belt because 4LHAs just chew through belts, the OEM belt is too small and requires adjusting every 20 hours or so. Still makes dust even when tight. I'm doing the port side first because it is harder to get to. Will likely do stb sometime in the future if I like it, which I expect I will. The kit is expensive, $450.00, so I want to make sure first.

We have worked all through the winter on our boat, maybe skipped 7 or 8 days. We finished the last major task today which was an inoperative windlass. We have a few more minor things to do before launch. Then everything that I know about will be done as far as things needing repair or upgrading. There will be normal routine maintenance to do after launch. When we were hauling I made a list of everything I could find that needed fixing/upgrading. The list was 4 pages long, now 3 minor items.

By definition, there is always something going wrong with one's boat.

Perhaps the header could read, "What's right with your boat..?
Maybe it could be a bit more uplifting to make a list of everything that is really right on your boat...?....nah...

Everything on your boat is broken, you just don't know it yet.
