PNW to Mexico, Panama Canal, and Florida, on our way at last!

Caroline and I will be heading down in October. We're in Port Townsend now adding LiFePo4, new chargers, controllers and solar too. Three years of cruising in Alaska done, it's time for a warmer winter for a chang. See you along the way. -Pete

A new type of "Coastal Cruiser"?

Yeah, I was looking for a long-range slow turner low consumption boat when I came upon her. I sailed a few Skookums in the eighties, delivered one to Florida and another to Hawaii, but knew only one was ever built as a motor-trawler. Several of this 53' hull were built as commercial motor...

A new type of "Coastal Cruiser"?

I feel the same way. I love the weight of Caroline and her draft of 8'8". Also a cruising fuel burn of under 2 GPH for the main engine or 2.5 GPH for engine and gen set. easy range of 3,000 mi.

There is an Axiom I love: Cruising is really just fixing your boat in exotic places.

    small 12 volt freezer?

I bought a 47 quart AC/DC portable frige/freezer on Amazon for around $300.00. It's been working continuously for over a year and a half as a drinks cooler on Caroline. Great value. I have it plugged into the DC so it runs as needed whether at sea or shore-side.

"The hidden costs of owning a (super)yacht"

yeah, I get 38,462. plus. Still a chunk of change I think, though, that maintenance, constant updating and improvements cost me more like 20% per annum. Does not include fuel and cruising expenses.

It's happened again. Boat meets rock in Prevost

Hi Niel. You stuff them into gashes, cracks holes in the bottom. use them to help secure other materials as leak stops.

I gotta change my avatar photo.

It's a land yacht. You may indeed call the bathroom a "head". You may also want to fly an ensign from the stern.

    winter moorage in Alaska

I am almost through wintering in Ketchikan (it's still very wintery here, snow yesterday and maybe more today too). A must have is a 50amp capable isolation transformer. I have a kick up type which gives me good clean 230 vac at 50 amps , no matter what I'm plugged into. Also necessary are...

    Just Got a 50' Trawler

Very nice. I love the 330 series cats too We have a 3304, 7.5 kts at 2.2 GPH. You bought a boat that looks almost new in the pictures.

    Most Versatile Cooking Appliance

+1 on the insta-pot. Makes a great stew, chili, braised lamb shanks (braised anything) even while underway using the inverter outlets. Works well even in a whole gale. We've tried it and it didn't move around much locked onto the stove top of our Force 10 propane stove.

Single engine, dual fuel tanks, return to only one. General questions about why.

Caroline, too, has a single and two large fuel tanks Port and Starboard outboard of the engine. I generally feed from both tanks to help maintain balance and I do have a split return. I can manifold to or from either tank or both at the same time. One thing I did was to add fuel return filters...

Are you using a Bridle with your anchoring setup?

I reall don't need to take the load off my windlass. I have a way oversized commercial hydraulic reel windlass mounted so as to be the strongest part of the boat. The deck is 1 1/2" plus and additionally the windlass is through-bolted using a 3/8" ss backing plate. the 6 Bolts themselves are...

Are you using a Bridle with your anchoring setup?

I have 100' 5/8 chain and 400' 1/2' stainless cable. with proper 5:1 rode, I do not experience any jerking or sailing on the hook. I also have a small steadying sail I can keep up if necessary which always keeps me head to wind.

    Liveaboards in SE Alaska

In SE for winter Hi Jim and Rosy, I also am in SE for winter and some spot cruising, weather permitting. I am currently in Ketchikan awaiting some parts for an alternator problem. I am hoping to make it up to Petersburg for the winter slip and cruise from there. I will look out for you when I...

Bilge water a stunning color turquoise

Definitely cuprous-oxide. I see a ring of it in the picture. Check for an unbonded or green bronze fitting or thru-hull.

    fly bridge opinions

Caroline's Fly bridge is the maim operating station aboard. I've added a hard top, weather-proof side curtains (full enclosure) and she has Webasto forced air heating on the bridge as well. I would not trade for a stuffy confined pilot house only situation.

Please give me a digital survey!

a Monterey :thumb:This boat appears to be a Monterey trawler. They have operated as California coastal commercial trawlers for over a hundred years. They are very sea-worthy by design, but usually a bit rolly. They fave full keels and large rudders giving them the ability to be controlled in...

Waiving the White Flag - Looking for opinions

Flyguy, I can relate, sort of, to your lament. I am in the second year of a refit to Caroline. This is my ninth full refit and so far second most expensive one. I do know, however, that there is the bright side to all the work and expense waiting just around the corner. If you are able, take...

First post. Caroline has a 94 HP Cat 3304, burns 2.2gph at 1300 rpm and 8.2 kts through the water. She weighs 44 tons wet. Not bad for a 53' boat.
