Interesting way to use dock wheel in tricky docking situation

I like it a lot! Sketch is good enuff for govment work...! :) This would work well for me with a stiff North wind, as I back into my slip as well. I don't currently have a dock wheel, but could be tempted to add one. Do you have a pic of the dock wheel? Thanks for sharing.

    Reverse cycle AC cleaning???

I second all of the above, but especially cleaning the cooling fins at the compressor. My dock neighbor came in Friday night and AC wasn't working... that was the problem.

    Toilet smell

Sorry for the possibly hijack of the OP's thread, but since Peggy is involved here I'll just ask a simple question for y'all's opinions on this... We have a vacuflush system with two heads. All is well, except the fwd head bowl flush valve allows a slow leak-down (emptying) of the bowl, which...

    All Systems Failed

GPS was being test jammed in the upper Midwest... there was a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) put out on it based out of Wisconsin if I recall... Anyway, as stated already, regionally, there was widespread issues with air carriers having to amend approaches from GPS approaches to other navaids....

    Own or lease your slip?

Not a lot of docks here for sale over 40'... and those that are go for 60K+. I'm in a one of the major marinas on the lake and rent a 60' covered slip for $570/month Includes water, wifi, trash, and cable. 30'+ slips have separate electric meters which are billed to the boat owner. Pump outs...

Sequence for Switching from Shore to Ship (Genny)

Is there two shore inlets? This may be the "both" it is referencing. My boat has 2-50 amp shore cables labeled shore 1 and shore 2. Switch is shore 1, shore 2, both (1 and 2), OFF, and Gen. Same sequence as HiDHo above...^^^^

    What's the meaning of.....

Mine is a combination of a nickname given to me in the Navy (Bull) by my buddy that is from Baltimore. His nickname was the "Elk". Everybody on a ship got a nickname. I was on a guided missile cruiser for a little over 4 years. "Bull" was because I'm (was) strong and stocky, and because I'm...

    Overhauling a J&T Detroit 671N

Believe mine to be J & T's as well... I'll get some pics in the coming days, after I get a house move done. Anyone wanna volunteer to help...? :) This boat has low overall hours on her, but I know 2 of the 3 former owners and both were good (one meticulous) on overall maintenance and care...

    Dinghy

ZERO problem with a bimini on a dink. Unclip two straps... 6 seconds. OR Unclip two straps... 6 seconds, pull two pins on aft supports... 6 more seconds, folds down and lays along transom.

No need for concern. The DD 2-stroke engine is quite possibly the most successful engine ever made.

    Security while at anchor

Is there a pressure activated "door mat" type product that could be tied to a siren/lights, etc...? Place one at each entry point. Something requiring 30 or 40+ pounds to activate...? Something like this...? https://www.amazon.com/Ideal-Security-Pressure-Pleasant-Triggered/dp/B00GUNX7WY

Bulbous bow - A good thing or bad?

Don't know about a sub-80' vessel... but I had over 4 years on a guided missile cruiser with a large bulb covering the sonar dome, and can tell you in heavy seas, as the bow is coming down hard, the bulb would add a side-side lateral shimmy motion at the bottom of the downstroke (for lack of a...

    New Guy looking old boat

I looked at a 73 Pearson last summer here in the Midwest... it had the gas Crusaders and the price was definitely right, but I passed on it as I was looking for diesels. BTW, I LOVE the lines of the Pearson! The one I looked at was the 42' semi-displacement trawler. Anyway... this 42'er had...

    Dinghy power thoughts

That's hilarious, Jacques...!!! Literally laughing out loud... :) That being said, that great story as a basis for why not to go with a 15 or 20 on a dink makes less sense than duct-taping vacuum cleaner tubes to a tiller handle to pilot a dink from the bow... :)

    "Free" anchorage? Not really....

Sounds like a business opportunity... Small barge with hoist/crane. 2 guys pull engines, fuel tanks/lines, genny, etc... Second tow boat pulls hull X miles offshore... scuttles. $8K for boats 25' or less. $12K for boats up to 53'. Of course the municipality now has to pony up, but we all...

    Dinghy power thoughts

All excellent information, Willy... And considering your thought process above, I'd still be of the same opinion for the OP to go with the 20hp. Here's my reasoning... the OP says he's not a small guy. He said "we" and two small kids. He's also interested in exploring the Mississippi river...
