    CAT 3208 impeller questions

I had a whole brand new Sherwood pump as a running change because one of the pumps on my 3126B’s was hard to get to. It shipped with a brand new impeller and I don’t know how long it was on the shelf but the base of the blades had cracks in them. Luckily I wasn’t in a hurry and just popped in a...

    Anyone For A Fleming!

For a semi displacement hull the Fleming is very efficient at displacement speeds because it doesn’t carry too much weight in the stern. As others have said, I think the lower CofG is a price worth paying with the low height of the engine room and if they put more modest engines in it wouldn’t...

Double stainless clamps on all hoses?

Here is my collection of old clamps I changed. Tedious work but it gets you to look in areas that aren’t that obvious and to know where all your through hulls and hoses are, their condition and how to get to them.

    Aftercooler scheduled cleaning

CAT intercoolers had a bad reputation because of dissimilar metal issues in one area. That has been fixed but it suits everyone to keep changing them out (except owners). As one experienced diesel mechanic told me “he has a attic full of perfectly serviceable CAT aftercoolers”. If they have been...

    Porthole bedding?

Butyl but is does depend on how stiff the surrounds are. Some “cored” boats get very soft around any insert and you need to stiffen the surround. Nothing helps unless the core is solid.

Sizing a Genny based on requirements.

If you have a watermaker then size it for that. Otherwise get some solar panels because the biggest issue with any battery bank is the last 10%.

    Programming victron ?

There is a FB Group “Victron Energy User Group” which is a very good guide to what will and won’t do what with Victron Systems. Helpful people too with accurate and correct info.

    Programming victron ?

Unlike a IC like a Magnum what you can do on the remote panel is limited even with a GX attached. You have to go through the web or use a Mk3 USB as others have said.

Just curious how folks here would rank Diesel Engine Manufacturers

Both our small NLs had Shibaura motors from memory and they were little jewels. Simple but reliable. Isuzu makes some very good heavy duty marine diesels in the mid range HPs but no real high speed ones. They just don’t seem to market them much in the US for recreational use. Just about every...

Mainship Preferred Diesel- Catapillar or Yanmar?

We put 2000 hours on our 3126Bs without a problem but we ran them conservatively and kept the maintenance up. That said I think getting 450hp out of a 7.2L diesel is a bit of an ask and I would be happier with a few more cubic inches, lower rpm and a heavier block to get the same horsepower.

Trying to work out if this is feasible

We did it and had a boat in North America for a couple of years. It is neither as easy or hard as it seems. It is actually easier to buy a boat as a foreigner in the US than it is to buy a car but there are issues as described here by others. A fair number of Aussies and Kiwis do. Managing your...

    New to me Wirie Pro

Sadly there was a reason they went out of business. Thankfully I got a refund before they closed down. What they were trying to achieve was a good idea but shoving it all into a box up the mast probably want a good idea and they didn’t keep on top of their firmware. These guys are a good source...

    Naiad 252 oscillation

I have an extract from the service manual that is quite good. I couldn’t attach it for some reason but if you want it, PM me. Sadly, Naiad has a great product but their customer service is like a chainsaw, “hard to start” so that is probably why Stabilized Marine have done so well.

    Naiad 252 oscillation

Not quite the same problem but we had to change a potentiometer out because the fin was jumping around. There are new and old style potentiometers and the old (round grey pot) can fail. The new style are mounted on a standoff with slotted guides for adjustment. Sorry no pics available.

Do I need to pull my boat out of the water to change my exhaust tubing?

We had to replace the rubber sections of our exhausts and the mechanic wanted to lift the boat Because even with the levels it was close and could start flooding if we got a big wake. I went to Walmart and found two volleyballs and put them in the exhaust outlets and pumped them up. No...

    Anchor chain tensioner..?

I use a stainless ratchet strap run from a deck cleat and then ease the anchor chain back a bit. Most windlass manufacturers tell you not to leave the tension on the Gypsy.

    Power Steering on Bigger Trawlers

Heavy steering can also be a product of the seals on the rudder shafts. I know a few boats have neoprene seals and they can expand. There are various theories why but some say it is fuel residue in Marina berths. Like others have said our Robertson AP steered the boat easily and and quickly...

Impeller Install Issues Cummins Diesel QSB6.7

If it is a “keyed” impeller, slightly taper the outer end of the key with a grinder wheel before you place it on the shaft and it is a lot easier to move the impeller into place. I normally use a liberal coating of lanolin grease on the inside of the pump housing and on the cover plate seal...

    Windlass Help Needed

If you get really desperate take the windlass off the deck and turn it over. There are two circlips on the shaft that hold the shaft in place. If you can get one or both off the shaft you can hopefully slide it the right way, remove it and take the shaft to a shop to have the clutch removed...

    Windlass Help Needed

The parts diagram normally shows the new style clutch cones you have the old ones. The four bolts mentioned (not the pins on the clutch cones) hold the gearbox to the side of the casing casing. I think your key may be damaged and jamming in the slot in the shaft and the clutch casing. Try and...

    Hull performance

Hard to say from the picture but I am pretty sure it is steel and the chine is just there for ease of construction. The prop looks like a wing engine and the main prop may be missing. Based on that I am saying displacement no matter how big an engine you have. Not a Real Ship, maybe a Smaller...

    Terrible smelly exhaust.. just awful

As a previous poster said, check your EGR. The drain valve can jam and the filter fills up. Also newer thermostats will help because they are normally rated hotter than the originals. If you idle a lot or underload the engines you will get some oil build up in the air filter. Check the color of...
