    Boat Ownership Share

Personally, I see too many opportunities for problems/disagreements. It would be very difficult to get 2 let alone 3 or more "partners" to agree on additions, upgrades, even what is actually necessary maintenance, not to mention scheduling issues, usage issues, damage, etc. However, it would...

    Help a newbie please

Single vs twins is a topic for debate here on TF, much like "what anchor do you use". Each will have their own reasons, experiences, fears, etc. and there really isn't a "right and wrong" depending on various circumstances  For me, my reasons for not wanting twins are: 1) In the boat size...

    Help a newbie please

Good advice so far.....Power Squadron, Coast Guard, Charter Company courses, etc. There are many courses that are "classroom" only or focused. While they are worthwhile and many are almost necessary, I would suggest ensuring as much "hands on" training as you can, especially in the area of...

    Need dinghy davit advice.

+1 with Seawise I agree with Comodave. On our NT 37 (basically the same boat you are talking about), we loved our Seawise (manual) davit. We used a RIB with a Yamaha 8hp (2 stroke) outboard (which would plane the dinghy with 2 adults aboard). With this system you can still use the swim grid...

    Anchoring again

Hi Greg, First off, I do not have any personal experience with a boat your size, mine is with a 40 foot Nordic Tug (37) and 40 foot sailboat. However, there are many accounts online that state that the CQR is one of the worst anchors when compared to most plow anchors (like Bruce), and certainly...

    Seacock strainer

+3 on the Borel exhaust alarms. They will alarm before the engine gets toooooo hot (before damage usually), whereas the regular engine overheat alarm may not alarm soon enough to prevent damage. I also installed an Aqualarm raw water flow alarm. This indicates a no or low raw water flow...

    Boats you would buy again.

Catimann, I would buy a Nordic Tug (or an American Tug, prefer Nordic) again. However, with that being said, I agree with OC about tough for us to give meaningful advice without knowing what your parameters are??? About the Nordic Tug 37: The NT 37 (newer models are the 39 or 40) are great...

    PSS Shaft seal maintenance time.

John, Personally, if it were me, I would install the maintenance kit from PSS using the newer, better, pro (model) bellows (more expensive but has a longer stated life). These "devices" like most things require maintenance and/or have a working life. The manufacturer "may" for liability issues...

Should I consider doing my 3208 after coolers my 3208's myself??

Greg is so very right, especially concerning aftercoolers!!!! Barnacle buster treatment is really only a "stop gap" treatment (partially dealing with a small part of the necessary maintenance), maybe mid-season, to try to reduce engine temps by improving water flow throughout the raw water...

    TAMD61A block heaters

Based on my experience with the oil pan heater, it did reduce smoke on a cold startup, but like rslifkin stated, they do take longer to "warm" the engine. Due to the relatively small power consumption, I left mine on anytime we were connected to shore power during the shoulder seasons (did not...

Yanmar Elbows - Do these need replacing?

Exhaust elbows can look "fine", and may even be "fine", but if they are of the type shown in the first photo in post #6 and if they are installed in that manner, you essentially have a "doomed to fail" setup. In essence it is only a matter of time, when, not if. With that setup under the "right"...

    Exhaust elbow....

Patrick, Both the Borel and Aqualarm exhaust hose alarms (looks just just a "zip tie" like band) are installed on the exhaust hose (not the metal) just after (aft) of the mixing elbow. Your product must be different??

    TAMD61A block heaters

A much simpler, and in my opinion (and the opinion of Tony Athens a diesel engine "guru") better and easier option would be to install Wolverine oil pan heater(s). They are easy to install (as long as there is some access to the bottom of the oil pan) following the supplied directions and...

    Exhaust elbow....

Tiz, The Borel alarm works well and I did install mine on the blue silicon high temp hose. As Patrick described, this type of alarm will alarm well before your engine overheats as this is the location where high temps will show their ugly head first. Cheap insurance in my opinion. Good luck.

Yanmar Elbows - Do these need replacing?

On the face of the 2 photos, I agree they "appear" fine. However, exhaust elbows are a "wear" item and require periodic replacement with a time frame that is dependent on a number of factors. On my boat, my "stock" Cummins SS elbow (at 16 years old) looked, from the exterior to be in good...

Thoughts on leasing out my trawler for Loopers

To the OP: To me, another very important consideration would be "how attached to the boat" are you?? It sounds like you are proud of the boat and it's condition, have put alot of effort (and/or money) in it for maintenance and upgrades, etc. It sounds like it is currently in very good condition...

Fresh Water Flushing -- Water Supply Question

+1 on what Comodave said about aluminum engine anodes!!!!! Very important. :thumb: I am also with the group that closes their through hulls when docked (even at anchor for me) and using a label/tag on the ignition (key) to avoid starting the engine without opening the through hull. To me, this...

    Exhaust elbow....

Tiz, Check out your exhaust elbow. It MAY be a time bomb waiting to "go off"???They do require "regular" replacement even if they are well designed and installed. From a post I did on another exhaust related thread: Check out sbmar.com (Seaboard Marine in California"s website) for great free...

Fresh Water Flushing -- Water Supply Question

Seaboard Marine has a TON of free info available for someone who is OK with spending the time to have a good look around under "Tony's Tips". Also, in the forums, forum members, Seaboard staff, and sometimes even Tony himself answer questions. It is free to join in, but like here you must...

    Exhaust Mixing Elbow

Hi Mac, Check out sbmar.com (Seaboard Marine in California"s website) for great free info. Look under Tony's Tips or in the forums. Under the Tips, see "Doomed to fail" for some eye opening info regarding how exhausts are designed and installed poorly even from the factory! Yes, Seaboard does...

    engine block heater (FL135)

I agree with Figment. Personally, I would be hesitant to "punch out" a freeze plug and install a "block heater". It is way easier to install an oil pan heater (eg. Wolverine 250 watt) that will do the job very well (keep the engine warm, curtail the development of rust, make for easier starts...

    Nordic Tug Flybridge stability

I can't speak to the actual differences in real stability between the NT 37 models (Pilothouse vs Flybridge), but the higher up you are (away from the surface of the water), any roll will be more noticeable. I would also suspect that having a higher centre of gravity would also affect roll...

    Nordic 37 Delivery Passage Questions

Everyone does realize that 4.5 feet is the same as 4 foot 6 inches, meaning a difference of 2 inches? :) Is it possible that NT slightly changed the draft in a certain model year??? Dreamcatcher and Pilitak are both "older" boats (early 2000's). I would suggest that if that 2 inches becomes...
