Do I really need paper charts?

Getting back into cruising after 30+ years. Grew up on the Chesapeake. Wandered the east coast from Maine to Florida and Bahamas. All my charts and cruising guides are from the '80s. There is a Garmin chartplotter on the flybridge. I will be gathering up as many current/newer charts/guides as I...

Grand Banks 36 - Three tank version

Where is the third tank? Sounds like a previous owner installed a day tank. Looked at a 36 in Cape Charles that had that setup. Had the single John Deere. Would pump from either tank to day tank. Engine sucked from the day tank. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Hydrogen diesel injection?

200 mpg carb....... in a 1966 oldsmobile tornado front wheel drive with a 455 rocket gm motor. That lead sled could go, but stopping it with 4 power assisted drum brakes....... took awhile. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

Engine room fire suppression on 36 classic

Thanks. I will be going down to Marathon on Tuesday, so I will measure the engine room myself and calculate the cubic feet. I will then buy and install the appropriate sized unit. Was just wondering if I was close on measurements. Thanks Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    GB Roll Call

Greeting all. Just purchased 1979 GB 36 #599. Is/was the "Katie Ann". Last couple owned her for 20 years and lived on her for the last 15. Summered in Cambridge MD. Wintered in the Keys. Currently located in Marathon. Will be upgrading some thruhulls and a few other items. In September we will...

Engine room fire suppression on 36 classic

Trying to determine cubic feet of space in a 36 classics engine room. Next visit to the boat will be Aug 2 for a haul out on the 3rd. Anyone have a fire suppression system installed on a 36? Looking to install one. Estimate the engine room to be 12'×12'×4'. Am I close? Figured roughly 700 cubic...

    Brass Propellers - Too Thin?

Following this thread with interest. Will be hauling out new to us '79 GB 36. For the life of me, I can not remember the sequence that it currently has. Hauled out for survey 2 weeks ago. Hauling out August 3rd to replace 4 plastic thruhulls at waterline and possible replacement of other...

    GB 36/42 available berths

While I like the layout of the Europa style 32, it is not as easy to get from the flybridge to the deck on the 32 as it is on the classic 36. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

Loud "air Horn" noise from Shaft area

Yes. Inspection should include WOT and a backdown test to observe the engine mounts and coupling. Oil samples are good too. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Good Day All

Welcome. I am rather new here myself, but not to boating. We will be basing our new to us Grand Banks 36 in Crisfield. Recommend you look at a variety of trawlers. I prefer a single engine with a bow thruster. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Modern Retro Trawler

Have been looking at boats to do the loop myself. Have been out of boating for 35 years while life as a truckdriver got in the way. Now retired and with a new wife that does not know boating. So we have found a '79 GB 36. Needed something I could handle myself and teach the wife. Single Lehmann...

    Teak decks

Well, no need to worry about teak decks or fuel tanks. That boat did not survey well and was rejected. Blisters. So found one down in Marathon. A '79 36' that has new fuel tanks, no teak on main deck, and no blisters or moisture on the bottom. Haulout scheduled to replace 4 plastic drains with...

    New to the Forum

We are in the same boat as you kw. Been looking at trawlers in the 36' range as wife is a novice. Looked at 4 Grand Banks 36s. Last one was disappointing upon survey. So it is down to Marathon to look at another. Lots of good info on here. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

If you go back to the original pic, it shows the tender crane raised. So my assumption is that 2 people launched the rib that is in the pic with 2 people in it. The rib would then pick up the 2 that were still on the boat. Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

I suspected the white object on the port side of the exposed hull was a stabilizer. Not a fan of them. Basically a rudder on the side of your hull with no skeg to protect it. The stress on that part of the hull, especially a wood hull.... Sent from my SM-G715U1 using Trawler Forum mobile app

    Boat sunk in Glacier Bay

In the sailboat world that would be considered capsised. Bottoms up would be turtled. Looking at the crane and the rib in the water looks like they launched with 2 in the rib and 2 left on the boat.

    Blisters

Thank you all for your input. Just got the engine and generator report. It is as I feared. Little yearly maintenance and replacement of older items have stacked up. Waiting on general survey to see if I will proceed with this boat. If there were only one area to focus on..... not sure I want to...
