    Teak Caulk

The black rubber caulk between the teak strips has become loose in a few areas. Any idea on a good replacement caulk?

Beneteau ST 44 potential sea water intrusion

Probably not a drain plug as it situated near the top. Maybe a port to measure pressure? Angles look the same.

    Rudder Seals on ST44

New brass rudder sleeves / seals were installed recently. Mechanic indicated that the old plastic ones were not difficult to remove. Labor charge was about $1,500 for the total job.

Beneteau ST 44 potential sea water intrusion

Well, I continued to have trouble with seizing turbos. Volvo rep recommended new risers so I followed their lead. Here is a photo of the new ones, with a totally new design. No need for the insulation pads and there looks to be a brass drain plug. So far, so good.

    I just bought a 2019 ST44.

The hockey puck style transducer (which sends it's signal directly through the solid hull) will not work unless the lower cup is filled with liquid. Anti freeze is recommended and should be checked if the unit is malfunctioning. My original (stock) transducer was nearly useless in less than 10'...

    Lewmar Windlass Questions

I have 120’ of chain and 125’ of line. The teeth on the gypsy, if I have that right, grab both pretty well. So, the spool could be implemented on the line if it slips the gypsy? I do not use a second anchor. Learning, thanks!

    Lewmar Windlass Questions

I'm always trying to learn so can someone please answer these 2 basic question about my Lewmar Windlass: 1) The top "spool", which I believe is called the gypsy, right? Ok, I've never understood why or how I'd need it for anchoring. The steel teeth on the main gear grab the chain and line rode...

Disturbing report from New Bern, NC

Gene, very well said! Not to mention the expense, risk to life and limb, capacity at XYZ Marina, and domestic and work obligations- especially with a pending crisis! It so sad and we all grieve for the unfortunate.

Great video. I hope that was the worst of it! Was that "Scout" in the video?

    HELP! Dipstick fell into transmission

It may not be magnetic. Good, long, needle-nose pliers may grab it. I wouldn’t engage transmission but I’m not a mechanic.

    Hurricane Florence

We were planning our drive south, Maryland to Florida, via I-95 Thursday and Friday. Instead, going to wait it out. May try it early next week. God bless all in harms way!

    Rudder Seals on ST44

I’m scheduled for this work in early October. I’ll let you know.

    Beneteau Swift Trawler 44

I think the pelican hooks on bow and stern life-lines are smaller than the 4 on the mast, but certainly metric. I’ve got some rubber caulking lifting on swim platform and in cockpit. Not sure what to do about it. Minor, for now.

    Who had right of way?

Thanks for directing me to these thoughtful reviews! Funniest stuff I’ve ever read! Can’t wait for the sequel: How to Avoid a Train. ROTFLMAO!

Let me guess, you lost the locking pin and maybe spring? Did this twice! Good news is that neither are metric and can be bought within similar hooks at Ace, at least my Ace.

Here is the pelican hook from one of the guy wires on the mast. Ace hardware board.

It looks to me that Aqua Map may be a good replacement for Garmin Bluechart.

    Rudder Seals on ST44

In anticipation of the rudder tube replacement, does anyone know the level of difficulty in removing the originals? If they were bedded with 3M 5200 (or equivalent) it could be a real effort to get the old tubes out. If you don't know do you have a good contact at Beneteau? Many Thanks!

    icw guide

Learned this from an "old salt" during my 1st trip, in 1990, down the AICW, using paper charts: Use a small piece of masking tape (1" x 1/2"?) marked with a hand-drawn arrow to continuously mark your position on the paper chart. Works like a charm!

    icw guide

On our AICW trip from Annapolis to Marco Island, FL, we relied on: 1) the Active Captain overlay on Garmin Bluechart Mobile, 2) Our Raymarine Chart plotter, and 3) An AICW chart book of smallish pages, spiral bound. Unfortunately, Garmin has discontinued their Bluechart Mobile app. I suppose...

I know that conditions are ever changing, but when we ran this canal 4 years ago there were no problems. Stayed in the center and minded the hazards noted on Active Captain.

    Beneteau Swift Trawler 44

I was able to run a water alarm from the bilge to the upper helm. The access points were: 1) speaker hole, starboard side, near radio 2) cut access hole in locker aft of upper refrigerator 3) pretty sure you can run wire from mast base access over to these starboard access points and then down...
