Replacing Engine After Only 335 Hours!

Volvo Replacing Engines Well, after about 3 years of watching my new D4's burn inordinate amounts of oil Volvo has advised me that they will replace both of my long blocks under warranty. The engines have nearly 400 hours on them and are burning oil at a rate of approximately .8% and .6%, port...

Upgrades for Going Coastal - Beneteau Swift Trawler 44

Rub Rail I'm considering adding a more effective rub rail, high near the cap rail, starting at the midship cleat. The bow flair renders the stock rub rail pretty useless on near the bow. Any thoughts on this?

For the record, they DID give me a refund for the unused portion.

    Unreliable Depth Sounder

My Raymarine depth sounder seems to lose the bottom from time to time (5-10% of the time), often in shallowish water. Seems to occur when trimming bow down, or changing speed but it's really quite intermittent and annoying. I've had my diver focus on keeping it clean but it still happens...

Upgrades for Going Coastal - Beneteau Swift Trawler 44

Wow, great stuff! My two little upgrades that come to mind: 1) My dealer was delivering a ST 44 in rolling seas when the main saloon doors slammed closed and broke the cheesy lock / latch. With no easy way to secure the door the damned thing was then out of control and banging, unless dead...

    Active Captain

On our AICW trip from Annapolis to Marco Island, FL. we relied heavily on A/C. Not only was it a great planning resource but we kept it open and running as a great navigation aid. My wife, new to boating, by the way, had her iPad open to Garmin Blue Chart Mobile which helped with our course...

I got the same email about a refund. So far nothing else . Anyone know about this?

    Navigation software

I realize that most folks "go with what they know"- we go with Garmin Blue Chart Mobile, integrated with Active Captain and Premium Weather. It's really easy to plot a course, measure distances, etc... We run this on our both of our iPads along side of the Raymarine MFD. Also, you may like...

    Trawlerfest Bay Bridge Maryland

We got there on Wednesday morning for the seminars and I must say, it's like we surprised them. Parking was screwy- they parked us as far away as possible from the seminar building when there was a large empty lot adjacent to the building- yes, it was raining! They handed me my badge with...

    What should I have done?

Bill, well said, except playing Dixie, these days, may attract the black helicopters from the justice dept.:hide: And you may as well be :whistling:whistling Dixie :whistling:in trying to bring some formality to horn signals.:whistling:

    What should I have done?

:iagree: Right. He had the group of vessels in sight, thus, the "here I am" situation is not applicable. If he was trying to warn those vessels of his presence and thought there was danger, 5 blasts is the correct signal. I don't agree with the idea of 1 blast being quicker than 5 so it's OK...

    What should I have done?

I give JDCAVE a lot of credit for asking the question about what he should have done. As usual, I really enjoy all of your advice on this. "Close calls" are wonderful teaching moments. Accidents teach, too, just not so wonderfully!

    What should I have done?

This was copied directly from the boat docking placard, (which I thank you for posting): "1 short: -overtaking to starboard (respond in kind)" I find this very confusing. Who's starboard? Obviously, it MUST mean the starboard of the vessel being overtaken. Why not just state it clearly and...

    Greying Teak?

The difference in the top photo is quite stark! Since our teak is 3 years old it looks like some sanding and saltwater cleaning may do the trick. Sand with the grain? Grit #?

Intracoastal Water Way here we come ready or not

Right. Trust that the ranges are in line (accurate) and steer toward the forward one until they line up. Back ranges are a bit more tricky as I don't like taking my eyes off the water ahead. I usually ask my navigator to advise me when I'm on the range. I really like ranges and feel very...

    Greying Teak?

Dear Slowboat, Great photos but the top photo leaves me asking, what did you do to the left side to restore the great color? Thanks!

    Fort Myers to Fort Pierce

Made the trip across last year. Overnighted at River Forest Marina on the St. Lucie side. A VERY well-run operation. Great hurricane hole and marina but absolutely nothing nearby. They have facilities on both sides of the lake. Docked at Indiantown in the 90's. The town seemed a bit "sketchy"...

    Questions on AIS Antenna

Our boat came with AIS. I'm pretty sure that the VHS antenna does double-duty. In fact, I believe that the AIS is actually integrated with the VHS. Does this sound right?

Intracoastal Water Way here we come ready or not

Mike, I think nervous and anxious is probably a good thing. Some very experienced boaters have advised me that the bad stuff often happens when you're tired or complacent. With your boat and and undivided attention you'll be fine! I'd set up an iPad with a good chart plotter that interfaces...

    Greying Teak?

All of your advice is great, thank you. I especially learned a lot watching the video, sent by BandB, on Teakdecking Systems.
