Starting to look at a Trawler

BandB, Thanks for those links. It makes sense that a thorough inspection of the engines should include all that is mentioned in the articles. Armed with this information one should be able to validate the abilities of a good diesel mechanic to determine his worthiness. My guess is that most...

Starting to look at a Trawler

Thanks guys, I have decided to steer clear of it. I agree that without a sea trial it would be a big chance that I'm not willing to risk at this time. The AC/DC systems were on the bottom of my concerns since I am a marine electrician. Not being familiar with diesels I was glad to see the info...

Starting to look at a Trawler

This is more what I was looking for. I was looking for answers to what (if anything) that a marine mechanic would be able to do and tell me about the engines. I have a call in to the mechanic, and waiting for a return call. The boat is in SC, and was winterized before pulling it. I did find...

Starting to look at a Trawler

WXX3, So, I should spent a few boat bucks to haul it to water, give it the once over, then if not satisfied, a few more boat bucks to haul it back to where I got it. Maybe it's not worth the hassle. The people that own the boat want it out of their hands, but i wouldn't want to spend 5-6 boat...

Starting to look at a Trawler

OK, Is a mechanic available? yes. The boat was moved inland due to Health reasons of the original owner. His family was paying for a slip that the boat was in, without it being used, so a financial decision was made to move the boat to their farm, where it has been since 2014. After his passing...

Starting to look at a Trawler

I don't know that a sea trial is possible because of the location of the boat. It will have to be moved/transported a couple hundred miles back to the coast. I'm willing to take a chance on it to a certain extent, as long as I can do my due diligence and check them out as best that I can. The...

Starting to look at a Trawler

Dhays, That sounds like a good Idea. I don't know if there are any Diesel mechanics on this forum, (or anyone that is intimately familiar with the volvo diesels) that would like to chime in.... I'm listening.

Starting to look at a Trawler

Since the boat is on the hard, I would prefer to do any repairs prior to wet time. Hoses belts, filters, and impellers all would be replaced in the process as well. The survey should reflect any deficiencies such as Thru-Hull fittings and the like. These would also be replaced as necessary...

Starting to look at a Trawler

This may be long but I have a few general questions. I am looking at a couple of Trawlers and would like opinions/advice. Since this is my first rodeo, I would want to get my ducks in a row, but there are a couple of things that I am not sure about. Of course a complete survey will be done...

    CAT 3208TA 375 - Runaway

My son is a Cat diesel mechanic. I asked him about it. he says that he keeps a small piece of plywood handy to place over the air intake to cut off air when he is working around them and there is a possibility of runaway.

    Bow Thruster cable/fuse Issue

The fuse in line with the positive cable should be sized for the cable. based on length calculations with a 10% voltage drop, it appears that your cable is undersized, or as mentioned earlier, a bad connection on that side of the fuse. excessive heat can cause a copper cable to become brittle...

    Bad breaker?

I agree. This sounds most logical.

    Epsom Salt

I did build one of these. It helps if the battery is only partially depleted. I used it on a marine battery. Before the process my conductance meter said it had 60% life left. This was after a partial discharge. I then put it on this charger for 4 hours. let it sit for an hour, and the life left...

Cruisair air handler blowers- If one ceases to turn...

If the motor has 3 wires, it probably has a start winding, If it has 2 wires, then it doesn't (unless the start capacitor is inside the motor housing). In which case it would possibly have a centrifugal start switch. (do not count the ground wire).

    Usefulness of thermal imaging survey?

I have the "seek Thermal" brand for android. It does work well for what I use it for. Battery temperature. Looking at the side of the battery will tell you if one of the cells are out of line with the rest. AC and DC power panels. excessive temperature indicates a bad or corroded connection...

Cruisair air handler blowers- If one ceases to turn...

Perhaps if I may...... The capacitor you replaced is a "Run" capacitor rather than a start capacitor. As long as the microfarad value is correct, and the rated capacitor voltage is above the supply voltage, physical dimensions should be only a minor concern(mounting). I would be more...

    Epsom Salt

I have tried this several times with no apparent results. If the battery has a dead cell (or a cell that is going dead, it will pull the voltage down in the other cells. May i suggest one of these Battery Analyzer
