Advise: Best company for getting a "6-Pack Captains License".

I went to and highly recommend Chapman's School of Seamanship in Stuart, FL.

Forward looking transducer? Do they work?

I only monitor the forward looking transducer at very slow speeds, less than 3 or 4 knots when entering an anchorage or a harbor. I don't see the value at cruising speeds where I am typically in very deep water. I just use the standard downward looking transducer when cruising. I change to...

    Anyone boat with a cat?

You can check out the Cruising Sea Venture videos on Youtube. Their two cats are often featured!

Forward looking transducer? Do they work?

I have the Garmin PS51 and have used it for the past 3 years in Southeast Alaska. It is indeed very valuable for scouting anchorages. You can see easily shoals, rocks, and abrupt bottom changes. As you mention you can also rotate the boat and scout for changes in depth around a potential...

    Wrangell Alaska Landslide

I know many have stopped in the wonderful town of Wrangell while cruising southeast Alaska. They have had a terrible landslide occur, 3 dead and 3 missing... https://www.cbsnews.com/news/wrangell-alaska-landslide-several-missing-storm/ The landslide is about 8 miles south of Heritage...

    Garmin Sonar for Cruising

I will add that I have the PS51-TH forward looking transducer in conjunction with a GT23M-TH ClearVu transducer. Indeed the forward looking sonar is very useful to scout anchorages in southeast Alaska where frequently abrupt changes in depth can be found. I find switching between bottom...

    Circumnavigating on a trawler.

If anyone would like to read an excellent blog of a trawler circumnavigation, including Cape Horn, I suggest "The Voyage of Egret". It starts in 2006 on a Nordhavn 46. No detail is spared. It's long, but well worth it. https://archive.nordhavn.com/egret/index.php

When did trawlers start being called trawlers?

"Another boat we studied was a Bayliner 45 Pilothouse. While not known for rugged build quality, we found the layout ingenious and interesting. I made the comment that it differed from the boats we had been considering in that it was a pilothouse design. This prompted Anton to cry...

When did trawlers start being called trawlers?

I can't answer your question but I too have read Tony's memoir. I found the entire book fascinating - especially his car tour throughout the African continent, including being an Ethiopian police officer for a while! Also his lifelong love for film making provides background to his amazing...

    What Would You Have Done?

It's not night, so I would have displayed two black balls, the dayshape for not under command. :):) Seriously.... Before the failure: 1. When entering or exiting a marina, anchor free and ready to be deployed immediately. 2. PFDs are worn while on the bow. After the failure: 3...

MMSI number for travel to Canada

Yes, my Vesper 8000 was user programmable, one time only. This is a link to the procedure: https://support.vespermarine.com/hc/en-us/articles/210478006-How-to-enter-my-MMSI-number-and-other-details

MMSI number for travel to Canada

One comment. Neither Vesper (pre-Garmin) nor Standard Horizon required an MMSI prior to shipment. Both have the ability for user programming one time. Other manufacturers may do this differently. Regardless, you still only want to do this once as later change is complicated at best.

Smoke and CO detectors engine room compatible

Yes, I found this out as well. Best way I found is to lay them all together on a table and go through the process carefully one by one. You may want to use ear plugs. I found this on the First Alert website: Note the 2 minute time limit. How do I program and link First Alert Wireless...

    Southeast Alaska towns/harbors

Wrangell. It's just the right size for us. We keep our boat moored there year round. Wrangell has two grocery stores, two hardware stores, a huge marine service yard and haul out. Wrangell is serviced by Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Ferry. It is centrally located to easily access the...

Questionable billing policy at Juneau Harbors

The harbor office in Juneau told me that if you leave before 8 a.m., you won't get charged for that day. Although this was last year, maybe it changed.

    PNW Cruising Outfits

We have found several "undocumented" anchorages in SE Alaska that are every bit as amazing as some of the more popular stops. (By "undocumented" I mean nothing marked in Active Captain and little or no information in the Douglas guide. ) For example, earlier this year we explored...
