    Live aboard Hurricane planning

Depends upon yard and surge. . We had 12 foot surge in Ivan and Yard at pensacola was high enough to handle that surge. But, agree not many could handle a 20 foot surge.

    Ford Lehman vs Cat 3208

I had a Californian 34 LRC with the 3208NA engines. Replaced the Risers which were hard to come by. Decent working room with that boat even with the V8s. Our problem was with the TX. Twin Disc 502s. A nightmare. Both failed and getting them repaired was a "goat rope". You might want to consider...

    Definition Of Full Displacement

Our 33 Trojan International express with the Delta Conic hull handles the roll issue the best of any of the 5 boats we have owned.

buying a trawler & walked away from the deal

If I order and pay for a survey, I too, think it is mine to do with what ever I choose. I would hope I could offer it to another forum user with out any legal issues.

? Replace Vacuflush, ?remove direct overboard discharge

vacuflush Just bought a boat with vacuflush. Old system, 1986 boat, probably original install. Nothing works. Wye valve handle gone. When turn the switch on for head, pops back off. Water drawn into the toilet leaks away. I too, am considering changing systems rather than trying to figure this...

    Friends say I'm an idiot

I have bought 5 boats and sold 4 over the last 15 years. Still trying to figure out what I want, I guess. The last boat I sold was the Californian 34LRC with the Cat 3208s. Engine parts were expensive and hard to get, ie, the risers for example. Likewise the TD502 both failed on me and with the...

    32'/34' trawlers that do 15kts?

The Californian 34LRC isn't exactly a trawler but it will do 15knots with the 3208 NA engines.

    Californian versus Hatteras build quality

We recently sold our 1983 34LRC Californian. Can't talk to a comparison of the build but can talk to the 3208NA Cat with TD 502s which were out nightmare. If cooling systems have been neglected it will be big dollars to fix and the risers are hard to find and expensive. The first pair were only...

    Angels Three Six

First sqd. was the Jolly Rogers with the "new" F8C. Second sqd. was VF 191 Satan's Kittens off the Tico in the Tonking Gulf.

    California 34 Long Range Cruiser

We had a 1983 LRC with the 3208NA cats and the TD 502. Handles great with the twin engines. But, if yours is powered with the Cats and the TD make sure they are in good shape. We spent thousands getting the water cooling system on each engine working properly, and eventually had to rebuild both...

    Angels Three Six

I understand the Navy carrier pilot crazy comment. 2000 hrs in the Navy's F8 Crusader, the first truly supersonic Jet. 5 carrier deployments, two to Tonkin Gulf. 499 normal carrier landings and 1 into the barricade since I was missing one main gear. 200 mission over Vietnam which I try not to...

    Do any "trawlers" do this??

Appreciate the follow up. Tollycraft is interesting. Did, all, or most have the lower helm? Need lower helm. I note one said V drive. Were they all V drives? Will look for Radon, Davis, and Farallon as well. Thanks for the suggestions. Parker and Mcknew indicated V drive or stern drive in...

    Do any "trawlers" do this??

We are in the panhandle of Florida. Go out the pass at Pensacola into the Gulf. Deep water is quite close in that part of the Gulf and lots of fishing spots, all within 25 miles. Have fished there for the last 10 years with different boats. Also fish a lot in the bays leading out to the "pass"...

    Do any "trawlers" do this??

Probably wrong forum, but will give it a try. Son-in-law looking for a boat that can be used to fish and also drag for shrimp with a kangaroo rig added to the boat. Must be trailerable, will accept 10 foot beam or less, and length up to 30 feet. Diesel, straight inboard, preferable Cummins...

    1983 Californian 34LRC for sale

We're going to be putting our boat on the market very soon. Is there a classified section just for boats? Getting a transmission rebuilt now but hope to have it back in business by next week.

    34LRC transmissions??

Has anyone changed out their twin disc 502 for a ZF 220. Smoked mine behind a 3208NA cat and getting it rebuilt has been a nightmare. Parts really hard to come by and some had to come clear across the USA. Next time need to do something different.

ZF 220 vs Twin Disc 502

Skidgear I will let you know as soon as we get the darn thing done and in. If you have two helms make sure the shifters are synced. Lower helm had it in gear but upper helm, apparently didn't quite have it fully engaged. Slipping and it got hot. Boat doesn't have tx pressure gages or temp...

ZF 220 vs Twin Disc 502

UPdate. What a goat rope!!! TX was smoked. Ordered appropriate kits. Than noted one gear shaft distorted from heat, seals wouldn't fit good. Mechanic picked up two used tx. but tx regbuilder wouldn't put in used parts and put his name on it. We're in Florida, nearest parts for this debacle have...

ZF 220 vs Twin Disc 502

My old 502 needs rebuilding and it is obsolete. Will a ZF 220 replace it on the back of a 3208 NA engine??

    What Size Battery?

I use two standard type batteries from Sams to start my 3208 Cats. I have them wired in parallel to double the cold cranking amps but one at 800 CCA would start the engines in the summer. Don't know about 30 degree temps however, but in parallel plenty of cold cranking amps. If you wanted to go...

    Help identifying Racor Filters

I leave the filter cracked until it fills, than tighten, haven't had any problem with that. My pump pulls fuel from the tank and pushes it on into the filter/filters as needed. If I am replacing the second in line filter I leave it cracked.

    Another one bites the dust...

Never was on the big E but I have three trips on the Independence and two on the Tico. On the Tico when we ran into heavy weather headed to the Tonkin Gulf. Had spray and water coming over the bow as it pitched up and down and tore away some of the cat walk rails.
