    Lewmar ProSeries 1000 rope jamming

Update. After changing both the stripper and the gypsy the rope still jams so we are going to replace the rope with all chain. The boat can handle the weight and the anchor locker will accommodate the chain. Our dock neighbour had the same issue with a different model Lewmar. He changed to 8...

    Lewmar ProSeries 1000 rope jamming

We purchased a new Lewmar ProSeries 1000 windlass in May, 2024. New 9/16" 3 strand rope, 5/16" G4 chain. Since new when retrieving the anchor as the windlass starts to lift the chain off the bottom the rope jams in the gypsy and stalls the windlass. The only way to release it is to back it...

    Ayetides App

We are based in Campbell River, BC. We use AyeTides together with Ports and Passes. We have found AyeTides to be accurate in this area up the Broughtons and throughout Desolation Sound. If you build a library into the Favorites of the tide/current stations you will possibly use they are then...

    Paint comparison two years in

We are now in Campbell River but when in both Sidney and Ladysmith we used Micron CSC and once did not haulout for two years with no growth just scum. So basically similar to waters as you. Like you we normally haulout every year.

All bottom paint with Pettit Horizons. No growth.

    Paint comparison two years in

We have had three different boats over the last 17 years. The first was moored in Sidney and Ladysmith, BC over 11 years, the second and third both moored in Campbell River. On all the boats we have polished the props and shafts at haulout and then slathered on a liquid wax to all parts. The...

    Port holes

When we got our trawler our ports looked just like yours. I used a green scotch brite scrubbie and AutoSol a metal polish (not sure if it is sold in the US but you could try any metal polish for stainless). It's the abrasive scrubbie that will cut through the green/black. If you have a really...

CHS Sailing Directions, B.C. Tide Tables and Coastal Explorer

Thank you for the link. Very handy. I don't have to update my older version of the Sailing Directions. This will definitely save paper (currently have a paper pile of updates to get to before next cruising season). Thanks again.

    Sea Wise davit

I can't help with the motor info but I recall when we purchased our Sea Wise that Stuart went south just after Christmas for a few weeks. If you don't get the information you need keep trying Stuart. We got our Sea Wise in February and he had been back for a few weeks by then.

    OASIS came to visit

We passed Oasis this past summer in Lewis Channel, Desolation Sound. She was headed south. What a spectacular vessel. Beautiful.

    Bomar Passage Series Portlights?

We have just gone through this with our Bomar portlights. First I emailed Bomar at bomar@pompanette.com and identified our portlight. From there you can determine the correct gasket before you spend the big bucks. Bomar was very helpful. Good luck.

Suggestions for new construction boat shed

Having spent some time in two different Ladysmith boatsheds in our prior boat I agree they are really nice sheds. The remote control door curtain is great - no more struggling with the curtain just a garage door opener remote when you leave and when you come back. No leaving the curtain open...

    Volvo Service Cost

This is copied from our manual of our KAMD300A. We have changed oil and it is straightforward. Compressor. Checking oil Checking and topping up Unscrew and remove the dipstick. Wipe off oil. Screw the dipstick down fully and then remove it again. Check that the level oil is between the...

    New 38 spec’d and ordered

We have a Garmin 942 (would have put in the 12 inch but no room) touchscreen and it works great. We have never been in water rough enough to not be able to use the touchscreen. EmTrak AIS connected. Congrats on the new boat order, we see "Emma B" at the dock here in Campbell River.

Difficult to find annual moorage on Vancouver Island

We moor in Campbell River. When we moved here we faced the same responses you received. However, we did manage to secure moorage in the River while we waited for space to open up in the other marinas. Definately don't approach the marinas here in the summer season, they keep all available...

    Boatshed curtains

When we kept our boat in Ladysmith, the boathouses there have curtains supplied by Clear Marine (I think they are in Sidney) that operate with a remote control. Works exactly like your garage door. The curtain rolls up on a roller across the top of the door. If you are down that way stop in...

Travels of "Emma B" (JD powered Helmsman)

There is excellent prawning just outside of Turnbull Cove. MacKenzie Sound is beautiful as well. Mount Stephens should be spectacular as you head around Watson Point. Enjoy.

    Seawise vs. Weaver

We installed a SeaWise davit 2 years ago. The system is custom built for your boat. You can have a look in the SeaWise website for the order form and see what information is needed. Stuart (owner of SeaWise) is personally involved in the design and build of your davit. He is accessible by...

Tide and current info for coastal BC (not P&P)

We have used AyeTides and have found them accurate throughout Desolation Sound and Broughtons. Data is available worldwide. Once you have the stations (both tide and current) added to your favorites you do not need cell reception to access the data. We also carry Ports and Passes and compare...

    Update on Best Marine Wax

We got talked into ceramic coating on our blue hulled boat by the detailer in 2019. The hull was polished first and then the coating applied. Looked fantastic. However, withing a couple of months we had streaks running down the hull and water spots from rinsing the hull with fresh water...

    Cheer Man PT41 potential acquisition

We owned a 41 PT for 11 years, lived aboard and cruised the BC Coast comfortably. We put many, many hours into keeping all that teak in good shape. If you are able to keep the boat under cover you will save yourself ALOT of work. If the boat is kept under cover now and has teak decks...

    Fender Marks on Hull

We have fenders tied to our dock (others on the boat for trips away). Hockey socks work well for the dock ones and relatively inexpensive to change when they become too dirty. No modifications needed just slide them on.

    Wash & Wax

Glad to hear you are happy with the ceramic coating. Unfortunately, our experience was not as successful. We have a dark blue gelcoat hull and were talked into the ceramic coating by the detailer. As far as we could tell the hull was prepped correctly and the product applied correctly...

    Overheat problem Volvo Penta TAMD41B

Zetec7 you might try giving a call to Advanced Marine in Campbell River, they are the Volvo mechanics up here. They have an extensive collection of good used parts that may be useful to you if you end up having to take the leg apart. You could probably run the question of the thru hull by...
