No mess The Perkins 6354 in my Mainship 34 had the same filter arrangement. As jgwinks points out, once shut down, the oil all drains out of the filter. Minimal oil spilled when changing the filter. Not sure if the filter is designed to be operated inverted, but that's how mine was.

I replaced the shaft in my 34 Mainship mk3 with 200 Perkins a number of years ago. I believe the prop shop said no more than 1.5x shaft diameter? There was only space for a donut style zinc on the shaft. I dont know what your distance is, or if it would cause the issues you're asking about...

In the picture, there appears to be a lot of overhang, distance between the cutlass and the prop? Could just be the picture, but you might want to measure and ask your prop shop.

I would love a pair of Cummins! Twin engine setup, and one isn't really in the budget. Never mind two.

As far as overhauling, its an option. It seems the machine shop costs alone, assuming my block and head are good, will be more than the price of a good used engine.

Definitely something to be cautious of. I'm in the market for a good running take out. I appreciate all the tips and leads I've received. I'm following up on all.
