    Eco-worthy batteries

My research this month proved to me that changing to LFP batteries is now cheaper than replacing my AGMs. For the same $$ you get roughly twice the usable Ahrs. Many existing inverters, like my Xantrex 3012s, can be programmed for LFP charging. Even my older Balmar 614 units can be custom...

What Will I Do With All My Spare Time - Semco Convert

Last November we faced a lot of flaking varnish on our Taiwan built Med Yacht. Loved the teak but there were not enough hours in our day to do it justice. Hired a crew to sand everything down and applied Semco clear teak sealer. Was less than impressed with the way it looked compared to a good...

Dedicated autopilot control or operate with MFD?

Another vote for dedicated AP controls. If you opt for the MFD approach consider adding the Simrad self-steer override that will disengage the AP when you need to take the wheel in a hurry

Good place for a slip in Ga, SC, NC?

If paper mills are an issue - as is the case for my admiral - avoid Brunswick and Fernandina. Also 2 active mills in Savannah I believe.

    Electro Scan Questions

Thanks for the replies. I found the answer on the last page of the owners manual: "we recommend 3M 4000 adhesive sealant for the motor mounting screws."

    Cruisair SMX ir Replacement

Thanks for the replies. It looks like all of the alternatives are priced above the OEM units. Even the Flight Systems SMXII that would work requires a $45 adapter cable and a different footprint mount. Sigh.....

    Cruisair SMX ir Replacement

I have a SMX ir control panel with a "Down" temperature control button that has stopped working. I see online that this is a common problem with these units as the membrane push buttons are prone to failure. Rather than replace it with another unit that will soon fail again, can I use a...

    Electro Scan Questions

I have a seized mixer motor on one of my electro scan units. Took it apart and have some questions: - must I replace the tank seal gasket each time or is it reusable? It looks fine and this is the first time the unit has been opened. - best source for replacement mixer motor 32-102aw (12...

Heading To Survey - Marine Trader Items To Watch For?

We did end up buying her. Survey went well, we completed some electronics upgrades and got ready to go. Then life got in the way... we've not been able to go cruising as planned. Boat is for sale but not moving in this market. Now for phase II we are likely going to use her as planned after...

    Mastervolt Charger Issue

Update: No Help From Mastervolt... Finally well enough to dig in to this problem. Reviewing the POs paid invoices I determined that what were presented to me as Lithium batteries are actually a pair of Northstar Blue 210FT AGM units. Packaging is different from any AGM I'd ever seen so I did...

    Mastervolt Charger Issue

I have two 12v Lithium batteries (not LiFePO) in series to power the 24v windlass & bow thruster. The charger and batteries are no more than 5 years old, installed by PO. The battery charger is a Mastervolt 24/40-3. I have verified AC power to the charger but have dead (reading 8v on the bus)...

Temporary Leak Stop - Bad Idea?

I have a pretty bad leak coming from above into the saloon and I can only find the general problem area via water testing. It will be some time until I am able to start drilling bungs and pulling up teak..... fun times ahead! As a temporary emergency measure I am considering applying Semco...

San Diego warship chicken 11/24/22 for parsing and perusal….

Um, really? I sure would have had a hard time convincing my C.O. during my deck officer quals that I didn't have to concern myself with the location of tugs & pilot boats! That concern is real and restricts what maneuvers you can and should make in restricted maneuvering situations... period...

    Pipe Davit Winch Recommendation?

The key, IMHO, is to use a winch or hoist that has a braking system that will hold the rated load. Winches designed for 4x4 vehicles do not and are a safety risk when lifting. The specs I saw on the StrongArm say it is NOT to be used for vertical lifting. Not sure if Warn makes a 120v hoist...

    Storm Shutters

PO of our boat took the time to fabricate and install polycarbonate storm panels for every window on the boat. We got lots of rain and winds around 65mph from Ian, and I was glad to have them. No damage of course but I'd probably not have been damaged anyway - this time. All I lost was the time...

Hurricane Ian was Tropical Storm Ian was Tropical Depression 09

Twin Dolphin Marina Bradenton Staff just reported essentially no damage. A coupe of boats with gelcoat rub against the dock and one lost a canvas top that was left up. We dodged a big bullet with this one.....!

Storm Prep - Shout Out To PO!

Most of us spend a fair amount of keystrokes lamenting the stupid / crazy / unsafe / weird things done to our boats by previous owners. I too am guilty as charged.... For the past few months I've been mentally gripin' about the space taken up beneath the aft deck hardtop by all of those storm...
